Jordan Henderson injury update: England star out of World Cup after freak accident

England have been dealt a major setback at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with midfielder Jordan Henderson ruled out of the remainder of the tournament after suffering a serious injury that will require surgery.

The 36-year-old sustained the injury in bizarre fashion following England’s dramatic 3–2 victory over Mexico in the knockout stage. Henderson, who did not feature in the match, was celebrating with teammates and fans at the Estadio Azteca when the incident occurred.

According to multiple reports, Henderson fell awkwardly while attempting to climb over pitchside advertising boards during the post-match celebrations, landing heavily on his arm.

Medical staff rushed to his aid immediately, and he was treated on the field before being stretchered off while receiving oxygen. He was then transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.

Injury confirmed as serious, surgery required

Initial assessments revealed a significant wrist injury, with reports indicating a fracture that will require surgical repair.

England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed after the match that the situation was serious, describing the injury as “really bad” and admitting the mood in the camp was mixed despite the victory.

Henderson is expected to undergo surgery in the coming days, ruling him out for the rest of the tournament.

While Henderson had played a limited on-field role at this World Cup, making just one brief substitute appearance, his importance to the squad extended far beyond minutes on the field.
