A journalist, soccer fanatic and Shrewsbury Town fan, Will’s love for the game has withstood countless playoff final losses. After graduating from the University of Liverpool he wrote for a number of British publications before joining AS USA in 2020. His work focuses on the Premier League, LaLiga, MLS, Liga MX and the global game.
Update:

With six months to go until the start of the 2026 World Cup, Seattle Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas is hoping that he gets the call.

The iconic Azteca Stadium is set to host World Cup matches once again and the 20-year-old Vargas is in contention for a spot in the Mexican squad. Through his performances with the Sounders he has developed a reputation as one of the best young midfielders in North America. This summer could be his chance to shine on the biggest stage.

Last year MLS.com named Vargas top of the ‘22 Under 22′ list, highlighting his potential as a genuinely elite talent. Vargas will soon return to Seattle for preseason but World Cup dreams with the Mexican national team will remain front and center.

“It’s an honor, it’s a privilege to be there [with El Tri]. I think the people around you help you relax more, feel comfortable, and bring out the best in yourself,” Vargas said in an interview with TUDN.

Despite his young age, Obed Vargas is a veteran of 157 games at club level. He has already received a handful of call-ups for the Mexican national team, taking on Valencia and the United States in 2024. However the final step to make it into the World Cup roster is a big one.

When asked if he thinks he will make the team, Vargas replied: “I think I can make it. I won’t say no until they announce the final list. There are great players in midfield, a lot of them. It’s the position with the most competition.”

The Mexican midfield has Champions League experience from Edson Álvarez and Orbelín Pineda, while 17-year-old sensation Gilberto Mora is rated as one of the best young midfielders in the world. Nevertheless, Obed Vargas is in contention for a place and will be desperate to force his way into Javier Aguirre’s team.
