Ciudad de México Update:

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she held a phone call with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who reiterated his confidence in Mexico as a host of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and confirmed the tournament will go ahead on Mexican soil.

Sheinbaum explained that, in addition to reaffirming Mexico’s commitment to organizing the event, the two agreed that a FIFA delegation will travel to the country to review logistics and preparations for the tournament.

“He assured me that the World Cup will take place in our country, and we agreed that a FIFA team will come to review several issues. We have been working for a long time, particularly on security,” the president said.

One of the main topics discussed during the call was mobility and traffic management in the three host cities, with the goal of ensuring smooth and secure transportation for fans, national teams and tournament staff.

Sheinbaum said Infantino asked that special attention be paid to this area to guarantee adequate mobility conditions for everyone attending matches, strengthening the overall experience of international soccer’s premier event.

The president also thanked the FIFA chief for his trust and said Mexico will provide security and hospitality to teams and visitors. “It’s going to be a very good World Cup. All the teams in the world can be sure that in Mexico they will be welcomed with open arms,” she said.

Finally, Sheinbaum noted that during the call she explained that the country recently experienced a “special situation” following the killing of “El Mencho,” but that conditions have since returned to normal. She reiterated that security measures will be maintained and reinforced, working alongside FIFA to ensure a peaceful and successful World Cup.
