The World Cup’s most controversial omission? Why a Tunisia wonderkid rejected his call-up
Louey Ben Farhat’s absence stunned Tunisia fans, then coach Sabri Lamouchi revealed an explosive conversation with the player’s family.
Tunisia believed it had found one of the faces of its future. Instead, the country is now dealing with one of the most controversial stories of the World Cup buildup.
Louey Ben Farhat, a 19-year-old forward widely viewed as one of Tunisia’s brightest young talents, appeared destined to make Sabri Lamouchi’s World Cup roster. The German-born attacker had become a regular presence in recent squad selections and seemed all but guaranteed a place on the final 26-man list.
But when Tunisia officially announced its squad, Ben Farhat’s name was nowhere to be found.
Why Louey Ben Farhat isn’t going to the 2026 World Cup
His omission immediately became the biggest talking point surrounding an otherwise predictable roster announcement. During the post-announcement press conference, Lamouchi was quickly asked about the teenager’s absence.
His answer shocked reporters.
“I received a call from his father this morning telling me it was too early for him to be called up, and he refused to play in the World Cup,” the Tunisia coach said. “Shortly afterward, I called Louey and he didn’t answer. It’s disrespectful.”
Fear of hurting his future?
According to people close to the player, Ben Farhat and his family are concerned that a disappointing World Cup performance could damage his market value and potentially hurt his chances of joining a European powerhouse in the future.
At the same time, many Tunisian fans believe there could be another reason behind the decision.
Because Ben Farhat was born in Germany, some supporters suspect the young striker may still be hoping for a future opportunity with the German national team, one of international soccer’s traditional giants.
That possibility has only intensified frustration among Tunisia supporters, many of whom saw the teenager as one of the country’s cornerstone players for the next decade.
Bayern Munich monitoring the striker
Ben Farhat’s rise in Germany has been impossible to ignore over the past year.
The versatile forward has emerged as one of the standout young players for Karlsruher SC in Germany’s second division, impressing scouts with his technical quality, movement, and ability to play across multiple attacking positions.
Earlier in March, German media reports revealed that Bayern Munich had identified the German-Tunisian attacker as a player of interest. Bayern had reportedly studied his profile extensively and opened formal discussions with Karlsruher about his future.
That attention from one of Europe’s biggest clubs may have changed the trajectory of Ben Farhat’s career, and perhaps his international future as well.
Instead of heading to the World Cup as one of Tunisia’s breakout stars, the teenager now finds himself at the center of a growing national controversy.
