Thunderstorm warning at Estadio CDMX raises concerns ahead of Mexico vs. England

A thunderstorm in Mexico City has delayed the World Cup Round of 16 match between Mexico and England.

Ciudad de México Update:

Less than three hours before Mexico and England are scheduled to kick off at Estadio CDMX, the scenario FIFA and city officials had been hoping to avoid became a reality: a thunderstorm. The weather warning appeared on the giant screens outside the stadium as AS reporters on site, Alejandro Gómez and Mario Guerrero, reported loud thunder already echoing across southern Mexico City.

Officials later confirmed the match would be delayed by one hour to 9 p.m. ET. It can then be further delayed by half-hour intervals, according to the storm safety protocol.

Mexico vs England delayed

Just as happened during Mexico’s group-stage match against Ecuador, which started an hour later than scheduled because of severe weather, the Mexico vs. England Round of 16 match is now currently scheduled to kick off at 9:00 p.m. ET, with a one hour delay.
