World Cup 2026

What’s the furthest the USMNT has gone in a World Cup? Best finishes in history

The U.S. is back in the knockout stage to face Bosnia and Herzegovina. How does this run compare to their deepest World Cup appearances?

Update:

The United States men’s national team is back in the knockout rounds of the World Cup, but how far has the USMNT actually gone in tournament history? While the program has had moments of promise across decades, their deepest run dates all the way back to the very first World Cup.

The USMNT’s best-ever finish

The United States’ top finish came in 1930, when the team reached the semifinals in the inaugural FIFA World Cup. That tournament featured just 13 teams, and the U.S. advanced out of their group before falling to Argentina in the semifinals. There was no official third-place match at the time, but the Americans are widely credited with finishing third overall.

It remains the farthest the USMNT has ever progressed in a World Cup.

The modern-era high point

In more recent history, the team’s best run came in 2002, when the U.S. reached the quarterfinals in South Korea and Japan. That squad defeated Mexico in the Round of 16 before falling 1-0 to Germany in a tightly contested quarterfinal match that still sparks debate among fans.

The 2002 run is widely considered the benchmark for modern U.S. soccer success on the global stage.

Other notable performances

The USMNT has reached the Round of 16 multiple times, including in:

  • 1994 (host nation)
  • 2010 (South Africa)
  • 2014 (Brazil)
  • 2022 (Qatar)

However, the team has not advanced past the Round of 16 since its 2002 quarterfinal appearance. There have also been setbacks, including failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, a result that prompted major changes within the program.

Where this current team stands

With the expanded 2026 World Cup format introducing a Round of 32 for the first time, the U.S. has already taken a step into a new phase of the tournament structure. But can this group match, or even surpass, the 2002 team’s quarterfinal run?

Anything beyond that would place this squad among the most successful in U.S. soccer history. To make history, the USMNT will need to go deeper than they have in more than two decades, and further than any American team has gone in the modern era.
