World Cup 2026

Why isn’t Cristiano Ronaldo playing for Portugal against Mexico today?

Mexico and Portugal face off at the Estadio Azteca today, but the Seleção will be without five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo.

Update:

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo will not be involved in today’s 2026 World Cup warm-up against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca, having been left out of the Seleção’s squad as he recovers from injury.

The Al Nassr forward has been sidelined since Feb. 28, when he damaged his right hamstring in his club’s 3-1 Saudi Pro League win over Al Fayha.

A player capped 226 times by Portugal - scoring 143 goals - Ronaldo will also miss Tuesday’s friendly against the United States, played in Atlanta, Georgia.

Ronaldo “not at risk”

Speaking last week as he announced his squad to face Mexico and the USMNT, Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez reassured reporters that Ronaldo is in no danger of being ruled out of this summer’s World Cup by his current injury issue.

No, he is not at risk,” Martínez said. “He has a minor injury. It is a muscle injury. It is an injury that we think he can recover from in a week or two. So it is not a very long period.

“I think everything that Cristiano has done, physically, during this season shows that he is in great shape, and that there is no physical problem.”

On Friday, Ronaldo shared a series of photos in which he can be seen on the Al Nassr training field, working towards his return to action. “On the ball,” wrote the 41-year-old, who has played for Portugal at five World Cups.

When is Portugal’s first World Cup game?

Drawn in Group K at the 2026 World Cup, the Portuguese kick off their campaign on Jun. 17, against the winner of an inter-confederation qualifying playoff between DR Congo and Jamaica. Martínez’s men then face group games against Uzbekistan and Colombia, on Jun. 23 and 27, respectively.
