World Cup hangs in the balance for USMNT star Gio Reyna
Once billed as the future of the national team, the Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder has been beset by injuries.

USMNT star Gio Reyna had hoped that last summer’s move to Borussia Monchengladbach would allow him to re-find his best form. However six months on, another spell on the sidelines is putting his World Cup chances in serious doubt. The 23-year-old joined the Bundesliga club in search of regular playing time but a series of injuries may have cost him a place in the USMNT squad for this summer’s tournament.
With just four months to go before the 2026 World Cup, Reyna has been confirmed as absent for this weekend’s game against Eintracht Frankfurt. This will be his fourth consecutive game missed due to an unspecified muscle problem, the latest in a string of fitness issues.
In total Reyna has played just 466 minutes for Monchengladbach this season, spread across 13 appearances in the Bundesliga and one more in the German Cup. With intense competition in the attacking positions in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, Reyna’s poor injury record and lack of match fitness could weigh heavily when it comes to the final decision.
Reyna now has a maximum of six matches with Monchengladbach before the March FIFA window, when the USMNT will face Belgium and Portugal. That window will be the last chance for Reyna to impress Pochettino before the final squad is announced.
After a difficult time with Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, the return to Germany seemed like a sensible move for Reyna. However he has appeared in just seven of Monchengladbach’s 21 Bundesliga games to date. Reyna played for USMNT at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but injuries have taken their toll, adding up to 289 days of absence according to data from Transfermarkt.
