MEXICAN NATIONAL TEAM
Xabi Alonso asks for patience with Diego Cocca’s Mexico project
The World Champion spoke about the process that Diego Cocca is starting with El Tri and offered his opinion on the situation.
The waves that the Mexican National Team has created since beginning its new project under the leadership of Diego Cocca have travelled far. Specifically, the news has arrived in Germany, where the boss of Bayer Leverkusen, Xabi Alonso, sent a piece of advice to the directors, staff and players in the Mexico setup.
In his press conference, Xabi Alonso, World Champion with Spain in 2010, advised Mexico to convince itself that they can be part of and carry out a process that allows the side to compete on all levels.
‘Strength comes from convincing and getting everyone in line’
“I don’t have all the information on the current state of Mexican football, of the national team, but strength comes from convincing people and getting everything in line with the federation, technical staff and team to create a project and want to relaunch a great country like Mexico back into playing in the biggest games”, explained the player.
In the same way, the ex-Real Madrid player assured that both players, staff and federations have to have patience and learn from tough moments and disappointments of the past, just as Spain did after winning the Euros in 2008 and 2012, either side of a World Cup.
‘I’m sure they’ll make the right decisions’
“There are always expectations with Mexico for them to work hard and do well, but I’m sure they’ll do it by taking the right decisions in the right moments and being patient; everything needs time, it was hard for us (Spain) and it took a long time to get to the point where we won the Euros in 2008 and after that winning everything else, but along the way we had a lot of disappointments and afterwards we learnt a lot.”
