Xavi asks for more signings during interview after Joan Gamper Trophy win
The FC Barcelona coach was happy with his players’ reaction in the second half but said the team needs some additions to fight for all the titles.
Barcelona will start their 2023-24 season this weekend when the current LaLiga champions will take on Gefate in the opening game of the Spanish league.
Els Blaugranes managed to get the job done 4-2 against Tottenham in their traditional summer tournament, the Joan Gamper Trophy, at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, Barça’s new home for the next campaign due to the construction works that are underway at Camp Nou.
The hosts, who have now won four of their last five games, took advantage thanks to Robert Lewandowski but saw the English side come back finding the back of the net twice.
It wasn’t until the final 10 minutes of the game that Barcelona were able to bounce back from Tottenham’s two goals when the team brought on the likes of Fermin Lopez and Lamine Yamal. The latter became the sensation of the clash by showing his talent at the age of 16 and being decisive in Barça’s comeback.
Xavi wants more signings
After the game, Xavi admitted the team had a good reaction in the second half. The changes helped his side come back and win in front of their fans.
However, he admitted that with Ousmane Dembélé's departure, the team needs to cover his place and bring in other players to fight for all the titles. There are still three weeks left before the end of the transfer window.
“We have to strengthen ourselves well. The sporting department and the president know it. We will see what fair play allows us”, he said to Catalan TV TV3.
Barcelona agreed to the re-sale of one of their economic levers, which should free up sufficient funds to register their current players.
Xavi wants to cover the right-back spot and sign another midfielder and a forward, although given the LaLiga Fair Play rules, and that Lopez and Yamal have performed at a high level, the club may bet on them instead of signing other players.
