MET GALA 2024

The Best Met Gala Red Carpet looks from 2024

The theme for this year’s Met Gala was “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” and these celebrities embodied it best.

Update:

The Met Gala is a fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City, held each year on the first Monday in May. This year’s event was held on Monday. The Met Gala is well-known for its high fashion and avant-garde designs centered around the theme of the year. Celebrities and fashion icons show out every year in elaborate and creative attire.

The annual theme is introduced by Anna Wintour for the Costume Institute exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum. This year’s theme was “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” and was based around the short story “The Garden of Time” by JG Ballard. The guests were expected to wear something that represents fleeting beauty, utilizing flowers and nature to portray beauty and fragility.

The guests did not disappoint. Here are a few of the best looks from the night.

Gigi Hadid’s million-beaded, rose-bedded dress

American supermodel Gigi Hadid wore a Thom Browne piece - a white, off-the-shoulder corset dress with 3D yellow roses throughout. The most fascinating part of this dress is that it features over two million beads. The full look took a team of more than 70 people over 13,500 hours to make by hand. Hadid said she was “literally wearing a sculpture”.

Hadid paired the outfit with a classic red lip and soft curls, giving it a classic look. “It’s always a privilege to watch Gigi come to life,” Browne said. “She is a true talent that shines at whatever she does. I wanted her look to embody the fragility and immense work that you see in Andrew [Bolton]’s exhibit, blooming on the carpet and into The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Lana Del Rey embodies Mother Nature

Singer Lana Del Rey wore a woodlands look designed by Alexander McQueen’s Sean McGirr. The look featured a beige, fitted dress with tree branches growing towards her face and wooden antlers covered by a beige netting. The dress was inspired by Alberto Giacometti’s sculptures. It was embroidered by hand with bronze hammered bullion hawthorn branches.

Elle Fanning’s crystal look

Actress Elle Fanning wore a sheer gown that looked like it was made of glass, with birds flying from the shoulders. Here is an exerpt from Ballard’s “The Garden of Time”:

“The flowers grew to a height of about six feet, their slender stems, like rods of glass, bearing a dozen leaves, the once transparent fronds frosted by the fossilized veins. At the peak of each stem was the time flower, the size of a goblet, the opaque outer petals enclosing the crystal heart. Their diamond brilliance contained a thousand faces, the crystal seeming to drain the air of its light and motion.”

Fanning’s look embodies just that. She’s played Sleeping Beauty. On Monday, she was Sleeping Beauty.
