Novak Djokovic’s path to extend his Australian Open titles to 11 has come to an end, after suffering defeat to Jannik Sinner in the semifinals, 6-1 6-2 6-7(6) 6-3.

Djokovic’s devastating loss to Sinner in Australian Open

The loss to Sinner makes Djokovic’s first at Melbourne Park since 2018 and the first time he’s ever lost this deep into the tournament. And he did so in terrible fashion, with one of the worst matches of his career to date.

Djokovic finished the match with 54 unforced errors to just 32 winners. In the first set, he landed just 43% of his first serves and made two double faults and 15 unforced errors. It was only the third time ever that Djokovic had lost 1-6 at the Australian Open and the first time since 2013. In the second set, he had 14 unforced errors to just six winners.

He did look like he may pull a Wimbledon and come back in the third set, making his first aces of the match. They reached a tiebreak and Djokovic sealed the set. In the fourth, Djokovic saved three break points, but Sinner broke at the next game to take a 3-1 lead and eventually sealed the win with a huge forehand winner, defeating Djokovic and moving on to the finals.

Sinner will face the winner of Friday night’s other semifinal between Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev.

Djokovic did not take it well, at one point slamming his tennis racquet into the microphone on the umpire’s chair. His disappointment in himself was obvious in his post match press conference.

“Sinner outplayed me completely,” said Djokovic. “I was shocked by my level. This is one of the worst Grand Slam matches I’ve ever played. He did everything better than me.”
