Watch: Tiafoe’s angry racket smash lead USA to Davis Cup loss

Frances Tiafoe lost his temper in USA’s Davis Cup set tie-break match against Dutch opponent Tallon Griekspoor, causing the umpire to call the game.

Frances Tiafoe was playing for the USA in the set tie-break match against Netherlands’ Tallon Griekspoor, but unfortunately ended the game with a loss on a point penalty. At one point, Tiafoe got into a heated discussion with the chair umpire, insisting that a point be replayed. The umpire refused, causing Tiafoe to lose his temper and smash his racket, a move that cost him the match as the umpire called the game and declared Griekspoor the winner.

Technically, the USA had already lost the Davis Cup tie to the Netherlands, as Botic van de Zandschulp beat Tommy Paul 7-6 (2), 6-2 in the opening singles match. Still, Tiafoe’s outburst was not a good look. The USA will now face Finland on Saturday as they look to qualify for the Davis Cup finals in Malaga in November.
