What happens if Zack Martin misses Cowboys training camp?
Dallas Cowboys six-time All-Pro guard Zack Martin is threatening to sit out practice because he is unhappy with his contract and says he is underpaid.
The Dallas Cowboys are going to have a big problem if they don’t make their six-time All-Pro guard Zack Martin happy, and right now, he ain’t happy. Martin is now considering not reporting to training camp because he feels he is “woefully underpaid” and extremely unhappy with his contract and the Cowboys’ unwillingness to restructure it. That’s not good news for the Cowboys. Martin is one of the best guards in the league. If Martin misses camp, per the 2020 CBA rules, the Cowboys can fine him $50,000 per day for each practice he misses. Clearly, he’s willing to pay the price to try to enact change.
How does Zack Martin’s pay compare to other players at the guard position?
It is true that Martin would be making around $7 million less than the league’s highest-paid guards, who will be making an average $20 million this season. He is currently tied to the $14 million-AVV contract he signed in 2018, which was restructured for a fifth time in March - he was signed through 2024 with the last restructure turning $12 million of his $13.5 million base salary into a signing bonus and putting his cap figure at $23 million. For a player who has been named to the Pro Bowl eight times and has the incredible stats that he does, it’s no surprise Martin is unhappy with these terms.
