Full-time thoughts:
Among all the madness, there was a football game in there.
We can take the first 90 minutes as one singular massive blob: both Tigres and América went blow for blow and tried to move as few chess pieces as possible as not to lose the game due to the nerves and a fear of losing.
The closest chance of the game until the goal was a long-range strike from Carioca: apart from that, it was Gignac's header and Quiñones' open goal miss that had fans gasping - but the accuracy was not there.
Undoubtedly, Fulgencio's red card ten minutes from time changed the entire way the game was played by both sides: from then on, the azulcrema players and fans could both smell blood and knew that they could attack Tigres at will.
Extra time began and: BOOM. Quiñones made up for his earlier header miss with a goal that took the roof off the stadium; from then on, Tigres lost their heads and an enraged Nahuel was soon sent off for a silly challenge on the goalscorer.
Tigres, by that point, had lost all hope and their dreams, however distant, were shattered when the second goal went in, an outrageous strike from Sánchez flying in from range.
América walked to the finish line from then on, but not before Rodríguez had his moment in the spotlight, cutting in from the left to crash a shot into the far corner.
The fans, players and staff of Club América will be both proud of themselves and relieved to have finally achieved what had evaded them for almost 6 years.

What a fantastic job André Jardine has done to get the team all pointing in the right direction: he has sorted the defence out while making them a constant attacking threat with plenty of variation in their play and they are, on balance, worthy winners.

Tigres attack but it's 2 vs 6 and América smother them like a fire blanket in an instant.
The passing triangles are out from América and so are the olés from the jubilant crowd.

Tigres control the ball but there are so many yellow shirts in front of them as soon as they cross halfway, the only option left is a long ball toward Gignac, who is also crowded out.
Malagón has a goal kick and he is in no rush to take it...

This is incredible: we've got an impromptu team talk... by Nahuel! He's been sent off yet instead of walking he has gathered all his teammates together and is now giving them a motivational talk.
The easiest decision you've ever seen, no complaints there. A ludicrous challenge from Nahuel, who has lost his head as he hilariously tries to argue his case.
América counter attacked, Nahuel came rushing out 45 yards and he cleaned out the attacker completely!

The stadium is literally shaking... what a noise inside the Estadio Azteca.
A simple goal: the ball is swung in from the left and manages to miss everyone in the box, landing eventually at the feet of Quiñones, who sees his first attempt saved but makes no mistake with his close-range rebound which he places in the top corner!

The ball is played from right to left by América and it flies out of play as Fidalgo and Fuentes look at each other as if to say 'I thought you were going to get it'. The groans from the fans might be the loudest noise so far tonight.
Cáceres clears a cross from the left that is sailed in by Fuentes, who gets it back and crashes a terrible shot/cross high and wide from a tight angle. Tiredness is playing a huge part in this tie.
América are having all the ball and Tigres are pushed back into their own box. This is going to be a long 9 minutes for the away side but so far they have been able to deal with everything thrown at them by Las Águilas.

I've just seen the Rodríguez penalty claim again (while we have a VAR check on the red card) and it's certainly not a penalty. The forward dived.
In a 1vs1 against Quiñones, the Tigres player took a swipe at his face. Instant red card from the referee, who didn't doubt the decision for a second.

Pizarro steals the ball well from Henry Martín's feet as the forward looked like he had the goal within his sights on the edge of the box.

Malagón is forced off his line to hoof the ball into the stands as América start to feel the pressure...
In Spanish they call that type of shot a zambombazo, and I personally think it should be the same in English. A real thundercracker does not sound half as satisfying as what the word zambombazo gives you.
Dos Santos slips and lets Carioca pick up the ball 30 yards out. With options to his left and right, the midfielder goes for glory and is inches away after his thunderbolt crashes off the underside of the crossbar!

Henry Martín escapes without a booking after Señor referee gives another free-kick to Tigres as América counter. It did look like a foul as Martín stood on the foot of Rafael Carioca.
Miguel Layún is let off the hook after he cheaply gives the ball away to Tigres, but Lainez and Córdova cross paths as the away side break and the two blue shirts smash into one another, leaving América with the ball in their own half.
We're back underway and he's carrying on.
Angulo is receiving treatment after taking a tumble.
Diego Valdés can't play the return pass to Martín on the edge of the box and Tigres clear. The ball comes back in towards Valdés from the right, but his shot is then blocked by Pizarro.
Good pressure from the home side yet again.

Lainez pulls Quiñones to the ground as the ex-Betis man squirms one way and then the other... but he's given the free-kick. I'm at a loss to explain that decision.
Quiñones and Fidalgo link up delightfully on the left before play is sprayed to the right: the home side have all had administered one of those pre-game fireworks by André Jardine, it seems, as they're playing at a completely different pace to what we saw in the first 45.
The Tigres players are becoming increasingly more frustrated as the referee gives América a few fouls in a row that they see as weak. For what it's worth, I agree with them.
América begin to put Tigres under some sustained pressure as they float in a series of crosses - all of which lead to nothing. Tigres defend well and deal with them all, but it's positive from La Águilas.
Henry Martín's spin on halfway is delightful and he opens to Layún on the right, who had started the move. The cross is aimed at Valdés on the edge of the box but there isn't enough power on the ball across and it's cut out by Tigres.
Angry América arms fly into the air as Cáceres plays a hugely wasteful long ball over the heads of everyone in yellow. Nahuel collects close to goal.

Play is stopped after Gorriarán goes down in América's box and wants a penalty. The midfielder hit his face off the shoulder of an opponent but he's going to need more than that to get a penalty out of the referee today.
It's América who have started with the ball: Tigres are sitting off but they are keeping their defensive shape well.
Nahuel is a big boy and looks OK to carry on. Martín was lucky he didn't get caught by the goalkeeper's spiky haircut.

Half-time thoughts:
I can't decide who I think will win this. In an incredibly even tie, borth sides have had golden chances to score. Gignac sent a ludicrous volley wide early on as Tigres started off the better side.
It took the home team over 20 minutes to settle, but the control on the ball eventually came, with Valdés cracking a volley at Nahuel, which was well saved.
Soon after, it was Gignac'sturnagain, and he would have scored were it not for lightning reactions from Malagón to push away the close-range header.
The best chance of the game, however, came from Quiñones, who saw his headed guided wide of the far post despite being in front of an open goal after Martín's delightful cross.

Malagón sends a goal-kick into the air and the referee calls for half-time in this fantastically entertaining tie at the Estadio Azteca!
Every single pair of eyes in the stadium, from the fans to the medical staff to the chefs inside the kitchens, thought that was in...
Fidalgo finds space on the right and pokes a pass into Martín behind the defence. The striker hits a cross across goal and Quiñones, jumping backwards, has the entire goal to aim for but somehow sends the ball wide from just a few yards out!

Layún swings the ball in from the left but the cross is poor and Tigres clear.
Quiñones goes down on the left touchline and América have a chance to sent the ball into the box.
Both teams seem happy to go into the break with things all even: I wonder if we will see any changes at half-time from either manager to try and open things up.
América have had their best spell of possession so far: the problem is that they haven't gone anywhere with it. Tigres' defensive block is holding firmand Fidalgo can't find a gap to thread a pass through the lines...
The boos are back from the home fans as América look happy to give Tigres as much possession as they want at the back. And they're taking their time...
We've got 5 minutes to go...
Reyes does well to cover down América's right wing as Zendejas finds space to drive into. A corner is given to the home side and Nahuel collects.
We've had another stoppage in play as América are given a free-kick about 40 yards out. It's floated in by Layún and cleared by Tigres.
The wide free-kick was whipped in by Lainez and met by Gignac who thundered a header towards the goal at the far post from just a few yards out.
His teammates were almost cheering for the goal before somehow Luis Malagón managed to get in front of the ball and scoop it up and away from goal!

Reyes is booked for a late challenge on Martín around the halfway line. It looked harsh to me.
Ozziel goes down inside the box as Tigres counter... the referee stares at the action and decides against a penalty!
Wow, that volley from Valdés has given everyone inside the stadium a new sense of drive and life. Quiñones' cross with the outside of his right boot was perfect and the shot was a real rocket from Valdés. Nahuel's reactions, given there were players in front of him, had to be perfect.

América catch Tigres out and Quiñones' cross was met by Valdés who smashes a shot at the goalkeeper from close range!
Layún is booked for tripping Ozziel Herrera after the winger let the ball run through his legs.
Guzmán is taking his sweet time with the ball at his feet. América, sat in their 4-2-4 shape, don't press the goalkeeper, who allows the clock to run down before eventually being chased down by Martín after almost a minute of nothing.
Zendejas takes down the switch of play from Quiñones, but the move is forced back due to Tigres' tight press.
América have, however, over the past few minutes, looked more comfortable on the ball: the nerves seem to have calmed.
Lainez breaks down the right and plays to Gorriarán on the outside, who sees his spinning cross cleared.
Fidalgo has been the one player in yellow who has looked to find gaps and runs from midfield. But there's really not a lot going on from the azulcremas and Tigres look pretty comfortable.
Twenty minutes gone and Gignac's outrageous volley has been the best chance so far. Apart from that, it's been tense and América haven't really got things going.
A couple of weak shots are fired towards Malagón and the América fans, unhappy with their team so far, burst into a chorus of boos.
Tigres attack and the ball is eventually sent way over the bar. It was a decent chance for Los Auriazules which came from Gignac down the right, and América took their time in getting back to defend.
Terrible marking from América's forwards gives Tigres the chance to attack through the lines and eventually the ball finds Córdova who sees his shot inside the box blocked.
América counter and the ball is slid through towards Quiñones, but it's too heavy and Guzmán collects.
It's a nice interception from Reyes who gets ahead of Zendejas on América's right.
He slides in and stops a promising attack from the home side as they drive towards the box.
The free-kick crashes into the wall and lands at the feet of Quiñones, who watches his effort fly into Row Q of the huge stand behind the goal.
América race up the other end of the pitch and Quiñones is fouled around 35 yards out, just to the left. Layún to take...
Wow, that was stunning. The ball was chipped over the defence towards Gignac who smashes a rocket of a volley from the edge of the box. The shot flies off his boot and skims the far post as it spins past Malagón in the América goal!

Lichnovsky gets up and is given the present of a booking by the referee, who - strangely - has deemed the challenge his fault.
The defender is back on his feet but looks to have hurt his lower shin, just above where his boot begins.
Jardine has sent replacement defenders to warm up. It was Angulo who clattered into him.
Lichnovsky goes down in pain after a big challenge on the defender as he drive through the lines. The medical services are on the pitch...
Fidalgo connects terribly with the ball as it's cleared away by Tigres and his shot spins wildly off his boot and almost out for a thorw-in.
Carioca does well to steal the ball from Valdés as the América midfielder drives forward down the right side to the delight of the fans.
It's all Tigres with the ball in the opening minutes as América chase and chase with Jardine swaying with nerves on the touchline.
It's a strong start for Tigres after Lainez swings a cross in from the right after 55 seconds which almost finds Gignac. América clear.

Club América’s Brazilian boss Andre Jardine sent a warning to Tigres ahead of the clash that he had been planning “something big” that had been in the works “since match day one” of the season.
We don’t quite know what that is, but I have to say I’m quite excited to see it. And I have $10 on him walking out in an eagle costume.
