Full time after extra time: Portugal 1-0 France (Eder, 109')

Substitute Eder's extra-time goal gave Portugal their first ever major trophy as the Seleçao overcame losing captain Cristiano Ronaldo to injury to stun hosts France in Sunday's Euro 2016 final.

Crestfallen Cristiano can't continue

In an encounter that certainly won't go down as one of the great title deciders, Ronaldo left the field in tears midway through the first half of the regulation 90 after picking up a knee knock in a challenge with Dimitri Payet.

Gignac almost wins it

But despite having chances to win the game - chiefly when Andre-Pierre Gignac struck the post in the 92nd minute of normal time - Les Bleus proved unable to capitalise as Portugal produced a dogged display without their star man.

Eder proves the difference

And Didier Deschamps' team were made to pay when Eder fired past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in the second period of the additional half hour, handing the Portuguese a first victory over France since 1975 - and a maiden European crown.

Here's how it happened:

Peeeeeep! And it's all over! Portugal have done it! Eder's late strike wins it for the Ronaldo-less Seleçao in the second half of extra time. They've well and truly buried the ghost of Lisbon 2004 by giving hosts France a taste of the very same medicine. A dramatic end to what started as a watchable final, but - with Ronaldo having been forced off through a first-half injury - steadily grew into an underwhelming spectacle. The French had chances to win it, most notably when Gignac hit the post in time added on, but didn't take them - and found themselves sucker-punched by Fernando Santos' men late on in the extra 30. Cristiano Ronaldo is in tears again - tears of joy! Portugal certainly haven't played football to go down in the annals of the beautiful game at France 2016, but they won't care: they're European champions for the first time.

121' | France are pushing for an equaliser; it's become desperate stuff here. The ball is swung towards the back post and headed down to Martial... could this be the leveller? Nooo! And the flag was up anyway. That must be it.

119' | Quaresma almost slinks his way past Sagna and into the box for a shot, but the Man City defender gets it off the winger's toes.

118' | We've not had any action for a couple of minutes as Guerreiro is treated for some sort of issue. Cramp? On the touchline, Ronaldo is active to say the least, shoving the left-back back on to the pitch to get 11 men on the field once more.

114' | Pogba stops a Portugal break and becomes the latest man to get a shiny yellow card flashed at him. France have five minutes to save themselves here.

113' | France have a corner, Portugal clear... and Nani is almost through on goal but the pass is juust over-hit!

112' | Evra swings in the cross and Patricio clutches on to it. France are definitely running a little bit quicker now.

110' | Deschamps immediatelt responds by bringing on Anthony Martial for Sissoko. Are Portugal about to do to France what Greece did to them 12 years ago???

109' | Gooooooooal! Eder receives with his back to goal, turns and sets off towards goal, bundling past Koscielny... and pings it low into the near corner past Lloris' despairing dive! Well, well, well!!! Portugal are ahead!

107' | Koscielny handles Moutinho's mis-control and gets a yellow card for his temerity. A dangerous free-kick for Portugal, in Ronaldo territory. Oh well... But wait! Guerreiro steps up and thunders it against the bar! So close!

Peep! Clatts gets us back underway!

Peep peepity peep! Half time in extra time. Having come this far, I think we all (us neutrals, at least) deserve a spot of penalty shoot-out entertainment.

104' | Chance for Portugal! They win a corner that's delivered by Quaresma for Eder to rise highest and head down towards goal - but Lloris beats it out!

102' | Gignac tries to pull it down in the box but boots it out for a Portugal goal-kick. "Where's Dennis Bergkamp when you need him?" laments my colleague at AS Towers.

100' | Koscielny falls awkwardly and has done himself a mischief. He's really grimacing, but looks like he's OK. Pogba tries to bamboozle his man on the Portugal byline, but ultimately succeeds in bamboozling himself.

97' | Matuidi picks up a yellow card after an aerial challenge with Eder. William Carvalho then trips Coman to join the Paris Saint-Germain in the book.

94' | Spanish politician Iñigo Errejon says it's been a great tactical contest. I say it's increasingly been a great big stodge-fest. Just as I say that, Pepe heads Quaresma's right-wing free-kick just wide - Ronaldo and chums were off the bench and getting ready to celebrate. The Real Madrid defender was offside anyway, though.

Peeeeeeeep! Mr Clattenburg gets extra time up and running.

Peeep! That's full-time! Extra time it is. A couple of inches to the right from Monsieur Gignac and it'd be a different story. It's not been the best of finals - what chance things improve in the next 30?

92' | Gignac hits the post! The striker receives it at the near post with his back to goal, and he turns Pepe terrifically before getting his shot away...but it bounces back off the upright, and the loose ball runs too far for Griezmann to capitalise! That could have been the title!

90' | Patricio holds on well to a low cross from the right as France look for a late winner. Sissoko has been the best man on the pitch, but the Portugal keeper also has to be in the man-of-the-match conversation. No custodian has made more saves in a European Championship final since 1980, stats men Opta tell us.

89' | This has been stodgy.

87' | Ooooooh, the idea was right there from Sissoko. He drives forwards, crosses the centre circle and tries to find Griezmann's run with a pass flicked with the outside of his right boot...but it's over-hit and 'Le Petit Prince' ain't catching that.

84' | Sissoko wants this over in normal time! He pings a venomous strike towards the corner from outside of the box, but Patricio produces a fine parry, before Coman sends the ball back into the area and it's the Magpies man who is getting his head on it - but he can't get any purchase on it, and looks to have picked up a knock to the head for his troubles.

82' | Portugal are offering better going forward right now - Nani it is who now shoots, but it's off target. Umtiti sees yellow for a foul on Eder.

79' | Oooh! Nani's cross has Lloris backpedalling and forced to bat the ball clear from under the crossbar. The Spurs keeper's clearance falls right to Quaresma, who produces an acrobatic attempt inside the box - but France's captain holds on to it!

78' | France bring Giroud off and throw on Andre-Pierre Gignac in his place, while Portugal make a third change as Eder replaces Renato.

77' | Coman dances his way to the byline and cuts back with Griezmann shaping to run on to it and shoot first time, but Giroud also tries to get on the end of it and in the end only succeeds in taking it off his colleague's toes.

76' | Nice from Guerreiro as he cuts inside his man on the left and crosses, but it's straight at Umtiti and the soon-to-be Barça defender heads clear.

75' | Great opportunity for Giroud! Coman slips the Arsenal striker in on the left-hand side of the box and his snapshot is saved by Patricio!

73' | Nani has a right old tanty after being penalised for a shoulder-barge on Sissoko. It's attack vs defence in Saint-Denis at the mo - can France get the breakthrough?

72' | Coman is almost in! He exchanges passes with Giroud and is almost bursting into the box, but is sheperded wide. The French bench was up there.

69' | Quaresma delivers a ball towards the France area - but no-one's there. Portugal are offering sweet Fanny Adams going forward here.

68' | Coman drives towards goal and shoots...off target! He's looked lively since he came on.

67' | Second substitution for Portugal as Joao Moutinho comes on for Adrien Silva.

66' | The Marseillaise rings out around the stadium... and Griezmann misses a great chance! Coman looks up and delivers sweetly to the Atleti forward arriving on the penalty spot, and with the crowd shouting '1-0!' he glances his header across goal and wide!

62' | Joao Mario goes into the book. Cedric crosses from the right and the Arsenal striker is there to bring down the clearance and turn neatly, before Mario puts a stop to any designs France had on launching a counter-attack.

59' | Coman's touch has Griezmann running in on the left-hand side of the area, and he flashes an angled shot at goal - but Patricio gathers!

58' | France make their first sub, and it's Payet off for Kingsley Coman. Boos/whistles from, one presumes, the Portugal-inclined contingent in the Stade de France. Was that challenge on Ronaldo his latest match-winning contribution this tournament?

56' | After that interruption, Joao Mario crosses and Umtiti nips in to nod behind for a corner, which comes to zilch. At some point Koscielny blasted a clearance into team-mate Sagna. "It's always funny when that happens," chuckles my colleague.

55' | Pitch invader! Go on TV producers, show him/her!

54' | Pogba over the bar! Payet clips in an inviting cross from the left, Guerreiro heads clear and it comes to the Juventus midfielder, whose volley is slapped high and never looked like causing Patricio any difficulty.

51' | Payet almost dribbles his way through the Portugal backline on the edge of the box, but is stopped at the last. Sissoko then barrels his way forward in the right channel and dinks a low cross into region of the 'corridor of uncertainty', which is cleared for a corner. Patricio grabs hold of the resulting delivery.

48' | Pepe goes tumbling down after being caught by Sissoko, and is down on the floor wailing for a card. It did look a sore one, to be honest. Clattenburg sidles over and says he won't be scribbling the Newcastle man's name in his little black book of naughty footballers. But no lizard tongue, disappointingly.

46' | Nani immediately wins a free-kick after being trodden on by Samuel Umtiti. No half-time changes for either side.

Peep! The second half gets underway!

Peeep! That's the end of a first half whose main talking point is, clearly, that injury to Portuguese star man Cristiano Ronaldo. France have been much the stronger attacking force and have had the better chances, but they appeared to go ever so slightly off the boil in the closing stages of the period as Portugal responded pretty well to the blow of losing their captain. Join us for more after the break!

45' | Ufff - that's a nasty clash of heads between Patrice Evra and Ricardo Quaresma. Thankfully they're both back on. Joao Mario looks up and crosses dangerously to the back post from the left, but it's out for a goal-kick.

44' | Say it quietly, but since Cristiano Ronaldo went off Portugal seem to have improved ever so slightly, in territorial terms at least. Meanwhile, former Magpies midfielder Joey Barton asks on Twitter: "Is this Sissoko fella the same dude from Newcastle last year!"

42' | Portugal win a corner, which is cleared as far as Guerreiro, whose pass is to no-one and drifts over the byline.

39' | Payet delivers, Giroud heads at goal...and it's not troubling Patricio.

38' | SOMEBODY BLOODY SHOOT! Renato with a neat shimmy to launch a Portugal attack that finds Nani racing towards the French box before squaring for Silva, who dilly-dallies for what seems like half an hour and is dispossessed, before Raphael Guerreiro finally puts his foot through it - but it trundles wide.

36' | I'm going to go out on a limb and say Portugal would bite your hand off if you offered them penalties right now. Cedric picks up the first booking of the game for a challenge on Payet.

34' | Sissoko is on fire! He receives the ball just inside the right-hand side of the area and bamboozles Adrien Silva with a sumptuous Cruyff-turn-style flick to create space to fire at goal - but his near-post shot is dealt with by Rui Patricio! Ooh! Suit you suir!

30' | Sissoko! They're calling him Moussa Bolt on Spanish TV! He bursts through the Portugal defence to the byline with a furious turn of pace - but it's put behind, and the corner comes to nought. Still what has he had for breakfast?

27' | Cedric gets to the byline and crosses to the back post, where Joao Mario can't properly get hold of his header. What a real shame that Cristiano injury is. The French will be cock-a-hoop, one imagines. But for everyone else, the game will be a much poorer spectacle for his absence.

24' | CR7 can't go on. He's taken off the ptich to applause from a stunned Portuguese support. He's disconsolate; for the second time in his career, his Euros final ends in tears. Ricardo Quaresma is on, Nani takes the armband. It's fair to say this isn't going to plan for Senhor Santos.

23' | Ronaldo is clearly limping. Surely he can't go on?! The ball then drops to Adrien Silva just outside the box, but he utterly shanks his volley.

22' | Sissoko drives forward and fires over from range! It took a touch off a defender and it's a corner...which Patricio gathers.

19' | Ronaldo is down on the turf and is in tears! It looks like he hasn't got over that knee knock he took from that Payet challenge... The Portuguese medical staff come on and are throwing every possible remedy they have at him. He limps off for more attention...and he's back on!

17' | Youngster Renato Sanches completely ricks up a straightforward piece of control out on the right touchline, to gleeful cheers from the French fans. Portugal not looking comfortable at all here; the French have settled much the better.

13' | Ronaldo appears to be OK, by the way. It's been a very watchable start, with the hosts enjoying much the better of it, that Nani chance notwithstanding.

10' | Great save from Rui Patricio! Payet sends it high towards Griezmann on the run on the edge of the area, and the Atlético Madrid ace heads an effort goalwards that appears to be dipping in over the Portugal keeper's dive...but he claws it over! Giroud then heads the resulting corner at the Seleçao custodian.

8' | Cristiano Ronaldo is down and having treatment after a nasty challenge from Payet - Portugal holds its breath as one...

7' | Opening for Griezmann! France come again as Sissoko bursts forward for Payet to cross. It's cleared momentarily, but suddenly Griezmann is in space behind the Portuguese backline and with a clear sight of goal on the left of the box - but slices his shot wide.

6' | Moussa Sissoko with the first attempt on goal for France! The ball drops to the Newcastle United man on the edge of the box, but he blazes high.

4' | France had started the more confident of the two sides, but it's Portugal's Nani who has the first shooting chance! Cedric Soares sends a long ball for the new Valencia signing to chest down in behind the defence, but he blasts over!

2' | There are plenty more questions, of course. Will Cristiano Ronaldo overtake Michel Platini as the top career scorer at European Championship finals? Will Antoine Griezmann bag a Golden Boot that he seems almost a shoo-in to win? Will Mark Clattenburg bring out the lizard tongue?

1' | Griezmann is almost on to a poor pass from Jose Fonte right away! Inauspicious start there for the Southampton defender....

Peep! A couple of dummies from Nani at the kick-off, and we're underway. Official home side Portugal out to lift their first ever major trophy and banish the demons of Euro 2004, actual home side France after a third European Championship title and a third straight tournament win as hosts.

1 minute to kick-off | All set in Saint-Denis... Will Portugal claim a first win over France since 1975? Will France inflict a first competitive defeat on Fernando Santos? As I'm now contractually obliged to tell you, something's got to give.

3 minutes to kick-off | We are treated to spine-tingling renditions of both anthems, it has to be said. That's to be expected from the hosts, but (owing to their sizeable community in Paris, one assumes) Portugal's isn't half bad either...

5 minutes to kick-off | Closing ceremony over, here come the teams... Anthem-off time.

The teams are out!

Portugal: Rui Patricio; Cedric, Pepe, Fonte, Guerreiro; Joao Mario, William Carvalho, Adrien Silva, Renato Sanches; Nani and Cristiano.

France: Lloris; Sagna, Koscielny, Umtiti, Evra; Pogba, Matuidi; Sissoko, Griezmann, Payet; Giroud.

Preview: Portugal v France: Euro 2016 Final

Final day is here, and we’re left with – theoretically – the competition’s two best sides in France and Portugal. The hosts, Les Blues, will want to repeat history by winning on home soil once again, as they did in the European Championships 1984 and the World Cup 1998. Portugal, on the other hand, will want to put a golden crown on their best generation in, well, generations, by spoiling the party in Paris.

Portugal

Portugal arrive in the final having not won over too many plaudits along the way. The team hadn’t won a game during a regulation 90 minutes until the semi-final, when they swept aside a spirited Wales side – the tournament’s surprise packages. Plenty of observers have also criticised Portugal’s unattractive style, but unlike some in Euro 2016, coach Fernando Santos has come with a plan and stuck to it. And despite it leading to some of competition’s most boring matches (3-3 draw with Hungary, aside) it’s a plan that’s evidently worked.

After drawing all three group games, Portugal eliminated a well-fancied Croatia side in extra time in the last 16, beat Poland on penalties in the quarters, before seeing off the Welsh on Wednesday to secure their spot in the Euro 2016 showpiece.

Captain Cristiano Ronaldo has extra motivation on Sunday evening. Score and he’ll overtake Michel Platini as the top scorer in European Championship history.

France

France – the tournament hosts and arguably the most talented side in Europe – are undoubtedly favourites. However, Didier Deschamps’ men haven’t exactly dealt tremendously well with the pressure that brings so far in the tournament. Les Bleus looked nervy in the group stages, despite topping their pool with defeats over Romania and Albania and a draw against Switzerland.

The France player’s edgy performances continued in the round of 16, when they went into half-time against Rep. Ireland a goal down. They found their feet in the second period, pegging back two goals to win 2-1, and since then haven’t really looked back.

They overwhelmed Iceland 5-2 in the quarter-final, and despite being on the back foot for most of their semi-final tie with Germany, ran out as 2-0 winners.

In Dimitri Payet and Antoine Griezmann (the latter of which is Euro 2016’s top scorer with six goals) have been two of the tournament’s undoubted stars. Can they inspire France to glory?
