What is the deadline to claim stimulus check plus-up payments in 2021?
Some received a lower-valued stimulus check than that of what they were eligible to receive. To correct the issue the IRS has sent plus-up payments.
Since March 2020, millions in the United States have received three stimulus checks that have been distributed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Beginning early this year the IRS began distributing 'Plus up payments' to those who received a stimulus check with a lower amount than what they were eligible to receive.
This IRS was able to "automatically send a third payment to people who didn't file a return but receive Social Security retirement, survivor or disability benefits (SSDI), Railroad Retirement benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Veterans Affairs benefits."
Additionally, many were sent to people who had not yet submitted a 2020 tax return were sent a corrected payment based on the updated information.
How to register to receive a Plus-up payment
No action is needed to receive a payment. Once a taxpayer has submitted a 2020 tax return, the IRS will be able to evaluate whether you are eligible or not. This is a very common question but they have stated that they will "automatically evaluate your eligibility after we process 2020 return" and that no one will be required to "take any action other than file a 2020 tax return as soon as possible to give the IRS time to process a plus-up payment before the end of 2021."
The American Resuce Plan gave the IRS until 31 December to make this type of payment, meaning that you have until the end of the year to submit your 2020 tax return to qualify.
Using the IRS' Get My Payment tool, those who are eligible to receive a payment of this kind should be able to track its status.
How many Plus-up payments have been sent?
The IRS has not provided an updated figure on the number of Plus-up payments they have sent since late July. By 25 July, the agency had sent "than 900,000 of these "plus-up" payments, with a value of more than $1.6 billion." From late spring through July, the IRS made a total of nine million payments "worth approximately $18.5 billion."
What if I haven't received any stimulus checks?
If you did not receive a stimulus check in 2021, you will be able to claim the Recovery Rebate tax credit when you file your taxes in the spring.
If you select this rebate the IRS will review its files you ensure that you have not received a check and if you qualify the total will be tacked onto your final refund.
