Holy Week go underway with the Palm Sunday celebration, where Christians commemorate Jesus Christ entering Jerusalem triumphantly. Each day throughout the week holds a specific significance in the final days of his life, culminating with his resurrection.

The commemoration of that event will take place this year on 31 March, Easter Sunday. While Holy Week is the most important period on the Christian calendar, it is not one of the eleven federal holidays.

So, if you need to do any banking, all things considered, financial institutions will be operating as normal. But with that in mind, as with any other weekend during the year, none will be open on Easter Sunday and most have reduced trading hours on Saturday.

These include: Bank of America, BBVA, BB+T, Chase, Citibank, First Citizens Bank, KeyBank, PNC Bank, Santander, SunTrust, TD Bank, Union Bank and Wells Fargo.

Most banks are closed on Sundays regardless of religious festivals

All major banks will be closed on Easter Sunday, March 31. This is nothing new, as most banks are closed on Sundays anytime of the year. However, some will be open on Saturday, if you have urgent business that cannot be done online or through an ATM.

Below is a list of banks’ business hours over the Easter period.

  • Bank of America – open on Saturday from 9:00-14:00; closed on Sunday
  • BBVA - closed on Saturday; closed on Sunday
  • BB+T – some branches will be open 9:00-12:00 on Saturday; closed on Sunday
  • Chase - some branches will be open 9:00-13:00 on Saturday; closed on Sunday
  • Citibank - some branches will be open 11:00-14:00 on Saturday; closed on Sunday
  • First Citizens Bank – closed on Saturday; closed on Sunday
  • KeyBank - some branches will be open 9:00-12:00 on Saturday; closed on Sunday
  • PNC Bank - some branches will be open 9:00-12:00 on Saturday; closed on Sunday
  • Santander - some branches will be open 7:00-17:00 on Saturday; closed on Sunday
  • SunTrust - some branches will be open 9:00-12:00 on Saturday; closed on Sunday
  • TD Bank - some branches will be open 9:00-14:00 on Saturday; closed on Sunday
  • Union Bank - some branches will be open 9:00-13:00 on Saturday; closed on Sunday
  • Wells Fargo - some branches will be open 10:00-15:00 on Saturday; closed on Sunday

It is advisable to call your local branch to find out what hours they will be open this weekend, if they open at all – but don’t be too surprised if no one picks up the phone. Even if your local branch is closed this weekend, you will still be able to access online and mobile banking services or withdraw cash from ATM machines if you need to.

If you are transferring money, be aware that all operations will not be processed until banks reopen for business, as is the case with any federal holiday or non-business day, the following business day. In this case that will be Monday 1 April.
