Agassi, Team World captain in the 2025 Laver Cup
The tournament announced the appointment of the former tennis player as the new Team World captain next year, replacing John McEnroe.
The Laver Cup Team World will change captains for the 2025 tournament’s edition. John McEnroe, who will lead the team for the last time in 2024 in Berlin, will be replaced by another tennis legend, fellow countryman Andre Agassi. The American is one of the few tennis players who has won the four Grand Slam events at least once and one of the five who has accomplished it in the Open era.
Talking to the Laver Cup, Agassi analyzed his appointment as the Team World future captain.
“I am truly honored to accept the invitation to become the Laver Cup Team World Captain. In just seven short years since the Laver Cup began, it’s been so enjoyable for fans, including myself, to watch the greats of the game team up and compete against one another in this incredible team environment”.
“The competitive level of the Laver Cup is off the charts and it’s easy to see why. You’re there with the team, your peers, guys you respect and everybody has a responsibility”, he added.
Agassi’s objective as Team World captain
“For me, the key will be understanding and managing the players’ needs throughout the year and getting to know them so that I can select the matchups to give us the best chance to get wins on the board and bring home the Laver Cup. I hope I can build rapport, respect, and trust with the players as John has done and I can’t wait to take on this role, it’s not one I’m taking lightly”, Agassi explained.
John McEnroe wished Agassi well as captain and stated he will keep supporting the Team World in the event.
“I want to congratulate Andre on becoming the next Team World Captain, I know he is the right man for the job. The Laver Cup is very special to me, a truly incredible competition that I love being a part of. I will be rooting for him and Team World and support him however I can.”
McEnroe’s departure won’t be the only one in the Laver Cup, as the tournament has announced that in the coming days, the name of Team Europe 2025’s new captain, who will replace Bjorn Borg, will be revealed, so 2024 will be the last year that will see Borg and McEnroe collide in the world of tennis.
