BARCELONA

Barça still 22 games off Real Sociedad's unbeaten record

Barça are unbeaten after 28 games but only 16 of them were in LaLiga, Real Sociedad hold the record in Spain; Capello's Milan, the European record: 58.

Update:
Satrustegio, Arconada, Zamora and López Ufarte

Luis Enrique's Barça continue to shatter records. The weekend win at Levante brought up the team's 28th game without defeat - equalling the club record. But the Blaugranas are still a long way off coming near to the records for going unbeaten in the domestic league. In their 28-game unbeaten run, only 16 of those games were in LaLiga (the team lost to Sevilla in Week 7). That is why they are a way off the Spanish record, which is still held by Real Sociedad. The fabled La Real side which featured Luis Arconada, Jesús María Satrústegui, Jesús María Zamora and Roberto López Ufarte amongst other greats went 38 games without defeat between 1978 and 1980.

Romanian outfit Steaua București went 106 without losing in Liga 1 from 1986, just after their European Cup triumph over Barça, and 1989. Figures in that Steaua side included big names such as Miodrag Belodedici, Marius Mihai Lăcătuș, Victor Pițurcă, Gabi Balint and László Bölöni. No team could touch them them in Romania and in Europe they reached the European Cup finals several times.

Some teams have records impressive runs in lower leagues (Sheriff Tiraspol - 63 games without defeat, Celtic - 62, Levadia Tallin - 61, Union Saint Gilloise - 60), the record in Europe's major league is held by Fabio Capello's AC Milan. It was the side that featured three Dutch masters (Gullit, Rijkaard and Van Basten) as well as other stars such as Jean-Pierre Papin and Dejan Savicevic; unbeaten in 58 league games from 1991 to 1993 - including one whole season without loss (1991-92). Arsenal, Barça's next rivals in the Champions League, also strung together a run which is nothing to be sniffed at - 49 games without defeat under Arsène Wenger with Thierry Henry as the team's star player.
