It turns out all the murmurings about Neymar's intentions to turn down a contract extension with the La Liga champions and move onto pastures new were unfounded.

According to ESPN Brasil, the Canarinho striker extended his deal with Barcelona two months ago.

André Plihal, a reporter at the South American sports network, claims that the 24–year-old will remain with Los Azulgranas until June 2021, putting pen to paper during the Club World Cup in Japan.

ESPN allege the agreement has not been made official yet because of commercial commitments as well as the judicial proceedings the player, whose original contract ran until 2018, is currently facing.

Apparently he will now only trail behind Messi in terms of the Catalan club’s payroll.

Neymar joined Barcelona in June 2013 and has since then made 131 appearances, netted 82 goals and won six titles with the first team, including last season’s treble (La Liga, Champions League, Copa del Rey).

His astronomical rise on the world stage was confirmed in January when he came third in the running for the Ballon d’Or behind Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
