Karim Benzema lashed out on Twitter at French Prime Minister Manuel Valls, after the politician said he didn’t think Benezema should be called up to play for France, saying sportspeople should be role models for children.

The Real Madrid striker turned to Twitter to say: “12 seasons as a professional: 541 games played, 0 red cards, 11 yellows!!! And some talk about my exemplariness???"

Valls had previously said: “A great sportsperson should be an example for youngsters. I’m not the president of the Football Federation or Didier Deschamps. It’s up to the coach to choose the best team possible, but I think the conditions aren’t right for Benzema to come back into the French squad. Football isn’t just of interest to the fans. It belongs to everyone. Every gesture has an impact”, said the French Prime Minister, alluding to the legal troubles Karim Benzema is facing in relation to a blackmail case over a sex tape.
