Villar lacked support

Villar took the decision after realising he would be unable to gather enough votes to win, and faced with a lack of confidence in his campaign from the major European federations, including France, Russia and Germany, who have indicated they will vote for Slovenian candidate Alekxander Ceferin.

Villar looks to continue in Spain

By dropping out Villar now has a clear run for the elections to the presidency of the Spanish Federation, which are likely to be held on 20 December, where he will be standing for re-election.

He has now headed up the Spanish Federation for 28 years.
