Update:
Valencia waiting on Marcelino eligibility

Valencia are waiting to find out whether Marcelino García Toral can coach in LaLiga this season as they seek to replace sacked boss Pako Ayestarán.

The choice to take over

Marcelino is Los Che's first choice to fill the void left by Ayestarán, who was dismissed on Tuesday in the wake of the club's terrible start to the season, which sees them pointless and bottom of the league after four games.

But the Mestalla outfit's legal department are unsure if Marcelino, who left his previous job at Villarreal this summer, is eligible to be appointed.

Valencia have lost all four of their LaLiga fixtures so far this season.

RFEF regulations look set to scotch appointment

Spanish FA (RFEF) rules prohibit a manager from taking charge of a team if they have been at the helm of another side in the division during the same campaign.

Marcelino was fired by Villarreal in early August, before a ball had been kicked by the Submarino Amarillo this term.

And following his departure from El Madrigal, Marcelino was told he would be able to coach a Spanish top-flight club as he had not overseen a competitive match in 2016/17.

According to the RFEF's regulations, however, a season is understood to be in progress as of 1 July.

Valencia have submitted an enquiry to the RFEF and Spain's coaches' association, and are awaiting a response.
