Gladbach officials reveal contact over Odegaard move in January

The future of Martin Odegaard remains unknown. The young Norwegian, who joined Real Madrid last year and remains under contract at the Santiago Bernabéu until 2021, has a number of options open to him as he looks for a temporary move away in search of first-team football.

Gladbach, a likely destination for Odegaard

As of yet the destination is still unknown but reports suggest that Borussia Monchengladbach are in a strong position to lure him to Germany. In an interview with TV channel TV3, the club’s sporting director Max Eberl said he was optimistic that an agreement could be reached in January: “Our conversation with Real Madrid is going very well,” he said.

Gladbach were one of the first teams to look into signing Odegaard when he decided to leave Norway but were soon sidelined by the interest of bigger, more high-profile clubs.

We were set on signing him before Real Madrid and other big clubs took an interest,” continued Eberl, “but then his price shot up and we couldn’t do anything.”

Odegaard keen on Bundesliga move

Just over 18 months later, things are different. Odegaard and his representatives, unhappy at spending time playing for Castilla in the third tier of Spanish football, are open and keen on a move to Germany. He was on the verge of leaving the club in August but his age proved an obstacle in the way of a loan move to Rennes. Odegaard’s age won’t be a problem this January, however; he turns 18 on the 17th December.
