The Amsterdam Arena, closer to getting the Cruyff name

A fitting memorial

Those that manage the Amsterdam Arena are very close to reaching an agreement with the family of ex-Ajax footballer Johan Cruyff to use the legend's name for the stadium. The Dutch star died on 24 March 2016.

According to the Dutch media outlet Algemenn Dagblad, one of the obstacles to the agreement being finalised is the concern the family has about future sponsorship. If the stadium is at a later date linked to a sponsor, this would directly associate the Cruyff name with that business.

Stadium ownership

Currently, the majority shareholder of the stadium is the Amsterdam City Council with 48%. Ajax holds 13% of the shares and the rest (39%) is shared out across various private shareholders. The venue is used for Ajax home games and those of the Dutch national team.
