Fitting tribute
The Spanish Football Federation are confident that, barring any surprises or unexpected agreements between Copa del Rey finalists Barcelona and Alavés that the May 27 final will be staged in the capital, on neutral ground, at the Vicente Calderón.
At the start of the season, RFEF president Ángel María Villar gave his word to Atlético de Madrid president Enrique Cerezo that the final would be played at Atlético's ground as one, last tribute to the stadium which will be demolished as the Rojiblancos move to new premises this summer. It was a gentleman's agreement, made before Atlético, or any of the top division sides entered this year's Cup tournament; now that Atleti have been eliminated, the Calderón is a serious contender to stage the final as a neutral ground.
Other venues
The matter will be discussed by RFEF directors and representatives from both clubs at today's board meeting in Las Rozas, although the main topic of the day concerns setting a date for the forthcoming presidential elecciones. Sources at the RFEF say that all of the potential venues named so far have been ruled out. The possibility of staging the game at Camp Nou has been considered for its large capacity, but it seem unlikely that Alavés will accept.
