Atleti launch first Qatar supporters' club in Doha
The Spanish ambassador in Doha, Ignacio Escobar, attended the inaugural meeting of the peña, made up mostly of expatriate families. Atlético vs Real Madrid
Atlético Madrid’s first supporters’ club, or peña, has been officially inaugurated in Doha. The Spanish ambassador to Qatar, Ignacio Escobar, attended the launch with the members of the peña, mostly whole Spanish families living in Doha.
The ceremony took place at the Doha Exhibition Convention Centre and the peña members had previously held their first meeting in the desert, adorning a camel with the Atlético colours.
The peña’s president, Simón Ponce, explained that the supporters’ group hopes to “spread the name of Atlético Madrid around the Middle East.”
Former Atlético player Roberto Solazábal, now the president of the Atlético veterans association, sent a message of support to the peña, whose mascot is a baby lion.
The club hopes to bring together all Atlético supporters living in Qatar for games and events in the future.
