Manchester United's victory over Anderlecht and their qualification into the Europa League semi-finals was marred when news emerged of a tragey in Nigeria. Up to 20 United fans could have died when an electrical cable fell in the City of Calabar where they were watching the game.

The fans had reportedly met at a football viewing centre when a transformer was said to have exploded during the game. This caused a high-tension cable to drop on the viewing centre with the confirmed number of fatalities not yet known.

The authorities have confirmed that seven victims have died but there are several more fans gravely injured. The club released a statement that said: "Our thoughts are with the fans of Manchester United, the friends and families of those affected by the tragedy in Calabar, Nigeria."
