DeShaun Watson to the Texans, when winning is not everything
The Clemson quarterback is a leader and a winner but the heart can not rule over the head and Watson's tape shows some deficiency that will need to be rectified.
The Houston Texans have selected DeShaun Watson with the 12th pick of the NFL Draft after trading with the Cleveland Browns to pick in that position.
DeShaun Watson is the clear example of a player who needs to be evaluated for deeper than just wins and losses. There are plenty of nuances to explore when it comes to quarterback performance and Watson's tape shows us plenty more than just victories - he has plenty of flaws.
If it was based solely on college, Watson would be the number one pick. To be a big-time star at Clemson, to play the last two National Championships and to win it last year with a last second touchdown...if we could bottle that and sell it, we could all be millionaires!
Here are the nuances: he is not overly accurate. He does not read the game all that well. He was helped out by throwing to oversized receivers in college. In two areas, he is ahead of the rest and that is in the leadership category and the winning category and that might be enough to give him a very decent chance and with that, his ability to read the game will improve.
DeShaun Watson quote [on picking Trubisky over him]: "You're gonna have to live with the consequences that come with it. That's how I see it. I try to stay in my lane. I try not to take the path. I respect Mitch and what he's done and all the hype he's getting, but at the same time, my result speaks for itself. I feel like I've accomplished everything that I could. I guess if that's who they're gonna roll with, so be it."
