Leganés consider a name change to boost sponsorship prospects
The LaLiga survivors are considering adding 'Madrid' to the club name in order to increase marketability, and are in the early stages of the consultation process.
It seems like a joke, but it is not. Leganés are considering changing the name of the club to incorporate ‘Madrid’ at the end. While this change would alter the name, it would not cause the club crest to change.
Leganés name change proposal is sponsor driven
The initiative emerged after various international sponsors suggested that it would be easier for Los Pepineros to market themselves globally if ‘Madrid’ were to be included in the club’s name.
By the same logic, the introduction of ‘Madrid’ would give Leganés a stronger link to the capital, thus making it easier to sell its image.
Senior individuals within the club are understood to be receptive to the idea, and have put in place a consultation process with stakeholders within the city and the club, in order to gauge their opinions. Initial contact was made on Friday afternoon.
Fans' voice will be key
Within the club, numerous people see the change as unnecessary, while some have been angered by the news.
Sources have confirmed to AS that in this initial phase of the consultation process, the opinions of the Leganés fans will be key. One would expect that the proposal will not go down well on the terraces.
The club, which hails from a satellite town to the south of Madrid, sealed LaLiga survival to ensure that they will compete at the top level of Spanish football in the coming season.
