Simeone: "The game against Girona was our worst"

Diego Simeone spoke to the press after his side’s goalless draw against Valencia in Mestalla on Saturday afternoon, a result that left his side fifth in LaLiga on five points after three games, all of them away from home while work on the Metropolitano is completed.

A fair result: “It was a good game between two sides who try to play similar football. We were more incisive in the first half in getting to the area. We played well, we created chances, but the most important thing is to score, which we weren’t able to do.”

Attacking options: “We tried a few things in attack, first with Vietto and Correa with Carrasco in support using his pace. They are quick players and there were times during the match when we hurt the opposition. The goal didn’t come in the first half although we had the clearest chance with Vietto. In the second half we tried to play through the middle with Torres and Gameiro and Koke and Gaitán coming in. We were looking to force Valencia into a mistake. We had a few counter-attacks that we could have finished off better and that played a part in the draw.”

Carrasco: “He could have been decisive but he didn’t have the game that we needed.”

Marcelino: “He knows what he is doing and you can see that with Valencia. Rodrigo ran himself ragged and whoever plays works to make sure they don’t leave spaces for the opposition. They played well in the Bernabéu and against us. They will improve this season.”

Away days:The game against Girona was our worst. We played well in Las Palmas and in Valencia we lacked a goal.”
