Diego Costa has written a farewell letter to Chelsea and the Premier League champions' supporters after completing his move back to Atlético Madrid.

Costa return to Atlético ends transfer saga

Costa's return to Atlético was confirmed on Tuesday, bringing to an end a transfer saga that saw the Spain striker refuse to report for Chelsea pre-season training after being told by Blues boss Antonio Conte that he was no longer in his plans.

Admitting his Stamford Bridge departure had taken place "not the way I would have wanted – far from it", Costa thanked the fans and his team-mates - who he said will "remain forever in my mind and heart" - in an Instagram post on Wednesday.

However, any mention of Conte was conspicuous by its absence.

Costa can't make Atlético bow until January

Atlético face Chelsea on Wednesday in the Champions League, but Costa - who scored 58 goals in 120 games for the Londoners - is ineligible to make his debut for Los Rojiblancos until January due to the Spaniards' FIFA registration ban.
