Soccer Football - La Liga Santander - FC Barcelona vs Las Palmas - Camp Nou, Barcelona, Spain - October 1, 2017 General view of Barcelona’s Denis Suarez in action with Las Palmas' Leandro Chichizola and Mauricio Lemos infront of an empty stad

The LaLiga match between Barcelona and Las Palmas at the Camp Nou took place behind closed doors, the club confirmed in an official statement before kick-off. Reports from the Catalan media earlier in the day had stated that the match would be postponed altogether, however the police confirmed there was no public safety issue with the game going ahead, and LaLiga refused to postpone the match.

There had been violent incidents in Catalonia throughout the day as police officers prevented people voting in an independence referendum by seizing ballot boxes at polling stations. The referendum was deemed illegal by Spain's constitutional court, and the central government therefore pledged to stop it taking place.

Given the exceptional nature of events, the Board of Directors have decided that the FC Barcelona first team game against Las Palmas will be played behind closed doors following the Professional Football League's refusal to postpone the game."
