Tottenham Hotspur got their first ever goal against Spanish side Real Madrid in their Champions League tie at the Bernabéu on Tuesday night, when Varane, under pressure from Harry Kane, put the ball in his own net.
The sides had met previously in European competition on four occasions, shared between the Uefa Cup and the Champions League in two quarter-final encounters, both with home and away legs. Real Madrid won three of the games, with the other being a nil-nil draw.

The quarter final double-header started with a 0-1 defeat for Spurs in front of their own fans. The White Hart Lane faithful saw an early Steve Perryman own goal give the visitors from Spain a useful away goal and that was enough to see them through to the semi-final as the return leg at the Bernabéu ended goalless. Emilio Butragueño down the right flank was instrumental in the move that led to the goal and Jorge Valdano's shot was redirected in by the unlucky Perryman.
The Liga side went on to lift the trophy after a 3-2 aggregate win over Internazionale in the semi-final (they lost the first leg in Italy 2-0) and then a 3-1 victory across two legs against Hungary's Videoton.

The next time these two faced off was in the showpiece tournament of Europe's elite. This time the first leg was in the Spanish capital and the margin of victory almost made the return leg unnecessary. Emmanuel Adebayor opened the scoring on minute four and that was followed by another from the Togo international early in the second half, and one each from Ángel Di María and Cristiano Ronaldo to send the Premier League side flying home on the back of a hammering.
Interestingly, both Gareth Bale and Luka Modric were playing in a Spurs shirt that evening and also formed part of the starting XI looking in vain to overturn the deficit in their home leg. A single Cristiano goal in the 50th minute put an end to any lingering hopes.
Real Madrid lost the semi-final to eventual champions Barcelona.

With six goals against and zero goals for, Spurs finally got on the scoresheet at the Bernabéu, and although Harry Kane didn't score it, he'll take a lot of the credit, having forced Varane into the mistake.
