Gabi agrees one-year contract extension with Atletico Madrid
The Rojiblanco captain's previous contract 2018. The 34-year-old will sign the new agreement next week once the club have made an official announcement.
Gabi will sign a contract extension with Atlético at some point in the next few days. The Rojiblanco skipper, whose current contract with the club is due to expire next summer, will add a further 12 months onto his arrangement, taking him to June 2019. Atlético offered extensions to Fernando Torres, Gabi and Juanfran at the end of last season - the first two accepted, only the full-back has yet to give the club his decision.
For some time, Atleti's policy with players over the age of 32 has been the same - veteran players who are playing regularly and who have no fitness problems are offered one-year extensions. At 34, Gabi has shown he has another season left in him. The new arrangement will maintain the same economic conditions he enjoys now - one of which was that the team qualified for this season's Champions League; the second, is that he completes 25 games with the first team. Last season, Gabi made 50 appearances in official competition (34 in LaLiga, 11 in the Champions League and five in the Copa del Rey).
Gabi to pen new Atlético deal this week
Atlético insist that their older players comply with a demanding set of criteria regarding contract renewals whilst understanding that every player is different in certain aspects. As team captain, Gabi plays a fundamental role at the club and Simeone feels that the midfielder still has plenty to give. Atlético are expected to make the new official next week, when Gabi will sign his new deal.
