Las Palmas boss Pako Ayestarán becomes coach with most consecutive LaLiga defeats
Defeat to Deportivo La Coruña means Rafa Benítez' former assistant has accumulated eleven consecutive defeats, seven of those with Valencia.
Pako Ayestarán has become the only coach to preside over 11 consecutive defeats in LaLiga, after his struggling Las Palmas side fell to defeat at home to Deportivo La Coruña on Monday evening.
Valencia and Las Palmas bear the brunt
Las Palmas have recorded four consecutive defeats since the 54-year-old took over from Manolo Márquez as the manager of the islanders in late September. Despite that, the club board has given the coach a vote of confidence. Ayestarán accumulated the other seven defeats while at the helm of Valencia.
The unwanted record has built up across three separate seasons. The Basque coach took the reins at Valencia on 30 March 2016, and made his losing debut against the team he now manages, Las Palmas. After three consecutive victories (including a 1-2 triumph over Barcelona in Camp Nou) and a draw, the bad run began in the ‘Derbi Valenciano’ against Villarreal.
Valencia then lost 3-2 against Real Madrid in the Bernabéu before ending the campaign with a defeat at Mestalla at the hands of Real Sociedad. Ayestarán remained in charge of Los Che over the summer of 2016, but lost the first four matches of the season against Las Palmas (2-4), Eibar (1-0), Betis (2-3), and Athletic (2-1). He was replaced by Voro in September.
Ayesterán woes continue on the Canaries
The Canary Islands have not had a rejuvenating effect for Ayestarán. He tasted defeat for the first time with his new team in curious circumstances, as they lost to Barcelona in an empty Camp Nou. Subsequent defeats to Celta (2-5), Villarreal (4-0), and Deportivo (1-3) take the run to 11. His Las Palmas side inflicted a 1-4 victory on Deportivo during that period, but it was a Copa del Rey encounter.
Ayestarán’s teams have conceded 31 goals throughout that rotten spell, scoring just 10.
