Italy will miss out on the World Cup in Russia after failing to overturn a 1-0 first-leg defeat against Sweden. The Azzurri were unable to score the goal that would have tied the play-off, and they will miss the festival of international football for the first time since 1958.

The Italian Football Federation is expected to sack coach Gian Piero Ventura after the Azzurri's failure to qualify for the World Cup. In response, IKEA, the world-famous Swedish flat-pack furniture supplier, published on Twitter a new advertisement in which they poke fun at Italy.

“So Gian Piero [Ventura] forgives us for losing his bench, we’ll give him a new one,” read the ad with an image of a garden bench. However, despite IKEA's gesture towards the Italians, the accompanying message of "give back the pencils" drew a line.
