Mali veteran Mohamed Sissoko moves to Mexico’s second tier
The former Valencia midfielder was signed by Mexican second-tier side Atletico San Luis on a free transfer.
Malian veteran Mohamed Sissoko, who formerly played for Valencia, Paris Saint Germain, Liverpool and Juventus, has engaged with Mexican second-tier side Atletico San Luis.
‘Momo’ will be traveling to Mexico after spending a season with Mitra Kukar in Indonesia’s Liga 1, where he scored five goals in 20 appearances.
In fact, San Luis will be Sissoko’s fourth team in a year. Aside from Mitra Kukar, he briefly played for FC Pune City of the Indian Super League, and Ternana Unicusano Calcio of Italy’s Serie B.
Atletico San Luis, which is 50% owned by Atletico Madrid, agreed on a free-transfer with the 32-year-old midfielder.
On Saturday, the Mexican second-tier side announced the signing.
'Attention fans! we have a new member in our team with experience at clubs such as Valencia, Liverpool, Juventus, PSG, Fiorentina and Levante. Welcome Sissokomomo!” tweeted Atletico San Luis.
Sissoko’s career
‘Momo’ began his professional career with French side AJ Auxerre in 2002, however, it was until he joined Valencia CF a year later that he gained recognition.
With ‘Los Ches’, managed by Rafa Benitez, Sissoko won the 2003-04 La Liga title, and that same year, the Valencian team became the UEFA Cup champions.
In the summer of 2005, the Malian joined Liverpool FC for £5.6 million. He was part of the FA Cup winning side in 2006, playing a vital role for the team.
In January 2008, ‘Momo’ moved to Serie A team Juventus for a fee of €11 million, though, several injury problems hardened his time with ‘La Vecchia Signora’.
On 28 July 2011, Sissoko moved to French side Paris-Saint Germain for €8 million. After a turbulent season with several scandals involved, he was sent on loan back to Italy, this time to Fiorentina, where he spent half a year.
After spending nearly five months without a team, the Malian joined La Liga side Levante, where he was regularly featured.
Sissoko left Levante in 2015, joining Shanghai Shenhua, however, he was released after just seven months.
After that, ‘Momo’ began a long journey that took him to India, Italy’s Serie B, and Indonesia, before finally arriving to Mexico.
He was featured 34 times for the Mali National Football Team, scoring two goals for ‘Les Aigles’.
