"Alexis has become the biggest mercenary in football" - Keown
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown, who spent 11 seasons with the Gunners, spoke about Alexis' decision to join United and not City "It's only about money".
Long-serving Arsenal defender Martin Keown, who won the Premier League three times with the Gunners, feels that Alexis Sánchez has got his priorities wrong and his decision to leave the Londoners to join Manchester United makes him "the biggest mercenary in the game".
Alexis "only thinking about money" - Keown
The Alexis saga was just one of the topics which Keown dealt with in an online chat with Daily Mail readers. The 51-year-old ex-player, who has defended Alexis in the past, feels that the Chile international has put financial gain ahead of his own development as a player. "City have wanted to sign Alexis since the summer and, if no deal is done in January, they will be waiting for him at the end of the season. City would be the natural place for Alexis to go to develop his football. He has worked with Pep Guardiola before. But for Alexis, this is clearly not about going to the best team, working with Guardiola and taking his game to another level".
He continued: "He has probably thought that he will not get a better offer if he waits until the summer, so he might as well take the best deal on offer now. It has been all about the money.
"From Manchester United’s point of view, they had to blow City out of the water. Signing Alexis takes them up a few notches when it comes to competing with their rivals. Ultimately, if we want to have a competitive league, City cannot have all the best players", cerró el histórico.
