Kepa reveals his reasons for not signing for Real Madrid
The Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper participated in the late night El Larguero radio show and spoke about his decision when a move to Madrid appeared on the cards.
Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, was interviewed on the El Larguero radio show as part of a special programme focusing on football in the Basque country. The keeper analysed his situation with the Spanish national team and also reflected on his decision not to move to Real Madrid when it appeared to be a 'done deal' back in January.
Kepa also talked about the inspiration that legendary Athletic Club goalkeeper José Ángel Iribar has influenced on his career: "Despite being something of a legend, Iribar remains a approachable figure and does his best to help everyone at the club in a very calm and understated manner".
Russia 2018
The 23-year-old keeper also talked about his call-up for the national team ahead of Spain's friendly games against Germany and Argentina and explained the importance of regular first team football if his dream of a call-up for the Russia 2018 World Cup is to be fulfilled: "To be in the running for a Russia call-up, I need to be playing well for my club, Athletic".
He also admitted that despite being close to signing a contract with Real Madrid, upon speaking to those closest to him he finally opted to remain in Bilbao penning an eight year deal with the Basque outfit: "It was a time of much reflection and the decision was one that would have shaped the direction of my sporting career. In the end, following advice from my family and close friends, I opted to stay. I'm happy with the outcome and look forward to serving the club for the next eight years."
