Antonio Cassano has announced his intention to return to football again after taking a year out following his double retirement a year ago after a brief spell at Bari, where he failed to make an appearance after moving from Sampdoria.

The 36-year-old, whose career has taken in spells at Roma, Real Madrid, Sampdoria, AC Milan, Inter, Parma and Hellas Verona, has put himself back on the market after a 12-month hiatus from the game.

Cassano, who faced plenty of scrutiny about his weight and lifestyle during his career, which also reaped 39 Italy caps, said he has been using his time out to run 12km every day and play tennis to regain his fitness.

Cassano: "I'm in great shape, better than ever!"

“I’m really eager to get back to playing,” Cassano said in a video picked up by Sky Sports. “Physically I’m in great shape, I weigh 82 kilos, I’m better than ever!”

Cassano was looking for a team when he parted company with Bari but due to a lack of offers elected to take a 12-month break from football instead. Now, he has declared he is ready to lace his boots again, although he has put a couple of conditions on a potential return: “I’d like to play where I live or nearby, no more than an hour or two away. I’m physically and mentally ready. The spark wasn’t there last year, but if this season there are any teams that are interested, I’ll study an offer.”
