Bernabéu: Atlético have taken at least a point from their last five visits to Chamartín: they won 0-1 in LaLiga in 2013-14, 1-2 in 2014-15 and 0-1 in 2015-16 and drew two seasons on the trot -  2016-17 and 2017-18). The last time Madrid beat Atleti at their stadium was on 1 December 2012 (2-0 with goals from Cristiano and Özil). One one club has strung together a run of six consecutive visits to the Bernabéu without suffering defeat - Valencia, who registered two wins and four draws between 1942-43 and 1947-48).

VAR: Tonight's game will be the first Madrid-Atleti derby to feature video assistant referee (VAR). Up until now, Real Madrid have benefitted by two decisions made by VAR (Benzema's goal against Leganés and Asensio's against Espanyol) and had one decision go against them (Modric's effort against Sevilla was not given). As for Atleti, they have had two decisions given in their favour (Cabral's goal for Celta in Vigo was ruled out while Koke's against Huesca was given) but have not had any decision go against them.

Courtois: Courtois made 154 official appearances for Atlético during which he conceded 125 goals. Tonight will be the third time he has played against one of his former clubs: he faced Atlético twice in last season's Champions League with Chelsea (1-2 at the Wanda Metropolitano and 1-1 at Stamford Bridge). The Belgian international will be the third goalkeeper to have played on both sides in a Madrid derby, in the league following Manuel Pazos and José María Cabo.

Simeone: Since he took the Atlético job, Simeone has faced Real Madrid 27 times, with a balance of nine victories, nine draws and nine defeats. Compare those figures with the 27 derbies before he arrived: two wins, eight draws and 17 defeats. If Atlético are victorious this evening, Simeone will overtake Luis Aragonés as the Atlético de Madrid coach to have beaten Real Madrid the most times (Luis toasted nine wins in 30 official meetings).
