Santiago Hernán Solari has been confirmed as the coach of Real Madrid, with a contract running to 2021. He had been acting as care-taker coach after the sacking of Julen Lopetegui four games ago, in the wake of the Clásico humbling.

The announcement was made after a meeting of the Real Madrid board, with the Argentinean being handed a deal to coach the first team until 30 June 2021.

Florentino Pérez offered Solari the job in light of the side’s performances since the Argentinean took over as care-taker coach, with Real Madrid winning all four of their games since Lopetegui was sacked.

Solari has best ever start as Real Madrid coach

Solari in fact has recorded the best ever start by a Real Madrid coach in their first four games, with four wins, 15 goals four and just two conceded. Only five other coaches have won their first four matches, but all had a worse goal difference: Pellegrini in 2009 (+12), Camacho in 2004 (+6), Boskov in 1979 (+5), Enrique Fernández in 1953 (+9) and Paco Brau in 1934 (+7).

Pérez offered Solari the Real Madrid job on Sunday

The official announcement comes three days after Florentino Pérez and Solari met in the wake of Real Madrid’s 2-4 win at Balaídos against Celta. During that conversation, as revealed by Efe on Monday, the president of Real Madrid told Solari he trusted him and that he wanted him to take over on a permanent basis. Pérez also offered a Solari a salary commensurate with the position as an elite level coach. Solari accepted the offer, without making any further demands and now is said to utterly focused on making his chance in the Real Madrid dug-out a success.
