Mourinho sacked after four players threatened mutiny

A small group of the Manchester United team informed Ed Woodward that they would look to leave in January if the Portuguese coach was not removed.

It is no secret that the relationship between José Mourinho and some of the Manchester United players was, to say the least, strained. And according to reports in the British media, it is player power that resulted in the Portuguese manager seeing the exit door possibly quicker than was expected.

Mou-tiny at Old Trafford

English daily the Mirror, reported that there were four players in particular who had spoken to the club's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward about the ongoing problems with the first team coach. In that conversation they had threatened to put in transfer requests in January if Mourinho was not sacked.

The paper referred to 'senior club sources' speaking about a 'toxic' environment around Old Trafford and this is why some of the stars in the team took direct action. Going over the manager's head, in this case, has worked in their favour, with Woodward concerned that he may lose who he regarded as personnel more key to the future success of the club.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken charge of the club on an interim basis, while suggestions are that Tottenham Hotspur's Mauricio Pochettino is the number one target to take over in the summer.
