The Madrid derby in numbers
If Atlético win this Saturday, Simeone will overtake Luis Aragonés as the Rojiblancos coach that has recorded the most victories over Real Madrid.
272 derbies: Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid have faced each other 272 times in official competition, making it the most-played fixture in the history of Spanish football. Atlético have won the fixture on 69 occasions. Madrid have recorded 138 victories, while on 65 occasions it has ended in a draw. In total, 812 goals have been scored in the history of the derby (465 for Real and 347 for Atlético).
Simeone: Since his arrival at Atlético Madrid, Diego Simeone has faced Real Madrid 28 times, winning nine, losing nine and drawing ten. These figures contrast sharply with those of the 28 derbies prior to the arrival of the Argentine coach, in which Atlético recorded just two wins, eight draws and 18 losses. If Atlético win this Saturday, Simeone will overtake Luis Aragonés as the Rojiblancos coach that has recorded the most victories over Real Madrid. Aragonés managed to win nine times in 30 official matches.
Draws: The last four league matches between the two clubs have ended in a draw. Neither team has drawn five consecutive games against the same opponent in the history of LaLiga (Madrid have also recorded four consecutive draws in a row against Athletic Bilbao, while Atlético have done so against Valladolid, Las Palmas and Real Sociedad).
One victory in 14: Madrid have only been able to defeat Atlético once in their last fourteen 14 meetings in domestic competitions (ten in LaLiga, two in the Copa del Rey and two in the Spanish Super Cup). That was the 0-3 victory in the Calderón in November 19, 2016, in which Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick. Atlético have won five of the last 14 meetings in domestic competitions, while eight have finished with the score tied.
Points lost: Atlético Madrid is the team that has lost the second highest number of league points to the two biggest clubs in Spanish football over the last decade: 13 points to Barcelona and 24 to Real Madrid, making a total of 37 points. Valencia lead the list with 38 points lost (20 points to Barcelona and 18 to Real Madrid). Valencia and Atlético are followed by Sevilla (11 + 21 = 32 points), Real Sociedad (19 + 8 = 27), Villarreal (8 + 18 = 26) and Athletic Bilbao (11 + 14 = 25).
Madrid’s away record: Madrid have only lost one of their last 17 league visits to Atlético (4-0, on February 7, 2015). In the remaining 16 visits, they have recorded eleven wins and five draws.
League standings: Madrid could overtake Atlético in the league standings with a win away in the derby on Saturday, something that has only happened three times in the history of the Spanish championship: on November 5, 1944 after they won 0-1; on November 22, 1964 following a 0-1 victory; and on 11 February, 1973 when Los Blancos won 1-2.
Barcelona advantage: If Atlético do not win on Saturday and Barcelona win on Sunday in Bilbao, Barça will have an eight-point lead over second place, a difference that has always been enough to win the LaLiga title, except on one occasion. In 2003-04, Carlos Queiroz's Real Madrid had built an eight-point advantage over second-placed Valencia with just 12 games left in the calendar, but ended up finishing in fourth position.
Solari: After Juan Antonio Ipiña and Bernd Schuster, Santiago Solari will become the third man in history to have contested the Madrid derby as a player on both sides, and then go on to become a coach of one of either team. Solari played in seven derbies (three with Atlético and four with Madrid) and did not lose a single one of them (six wins, one draw and three goals scored).
Camp Nou to Atlético: This will be just the second time in history that Real Madrid visit Atlético Madrid immediately after playing Barcelona at Camp Nou. The only other time that has happened was on 8 January, 1994. Madrid had lost 5-0 to Barca at Camp Nou, and five days later, beat Atlético 2-3 at the Vicente Calderón, eliminating the home side from the Copa del Rey.
