Community Shield: Manchester City beat Liverpool on penalties

Zinchenko will take. Alisson goes the right way and gets a hand to it but can't keep it out.

Ox absolutely buries his now in the top corner! Best penalty of the day.

Oxlade-Chamberlain to take now.

Foden sends Alisson the wrong way. As cool as you like.

Pressure now falls on Foden. 

Lallana slots it into the bottom corner. 

Lallana to take. He walks up nice and slowly.

Bernardo Silva buries his penalty now. 2-1 to City.

Wijnaldum walks up to the spot. He misses. Bravo saves it. Weak penalty kind of down the middle but a little bit to the right of Bravo. 1-1, it stays!

He buries his. A more muted celebration but he sent Alisson the wrong way. 1-1.

He gives a big strong fist pump to the fans in red. Alisson versus Gundogan now. 

That got the Liverpool end in the mood!

Alisson makes his way towards that end and it is Shaqiri who takes first for Liverpool. 

City win the toss. They'll take first and Van Dijk opts to take the penalties by the Liverpool end.

Seems both teams happy and ready for penalties. 

Salah sends in a cross after the corner comes to nothing. It bends around the post and out for a goal kick.

Off the line by Walker! Incredible scenes as his first shot is saved and he heads the rebound towards goal and Walker makes it back just in time. Corner.

City now with a chance. Sterling on the right but his cross is blocked and then cleared. Looks like Robertson hurt himself for that but it's nearly over.

Salah chases down a long ball but he puts it out for a throw.

Into the last minute. No extra-time today if it ends in a draw. It will go straight to penalties.

Foden eventually gets to come on for De Bruyne.

Rodri picked off as Liverpool press him and Salah nearly finishes. Lierpool all over them now.

Another Salah strike and it's saved by Bravo.

De Bruyne sends one across goal. City are exhausted. Liverpool with the fresher legs. Salah with the effort that takes a nick and loops over the keeper.

Referee got in the way of a pass and he has blown the whistle and gave a free to Liverpool for something earlier, it seems.

Naby Keita with a chance to put them ahead! Bravo saves it after Lallana pulls it back to him as he arrived in the box.

Offside as City push for the one to put them ahead.

Salah fouled by Zinchenko and Klopp has a chance to make a change.

Otamendi slips but Liverpool can't capitalise. Another chance gone.

Sterling is down injured now but unclear as to what it is. Looks like he cut his lip somehow.

Henderson tries to play it through to Salah by Zinchenko steps in front of him and he wins it back. Liverpool pushing for it but nothing doing yet.

Now Henderson is on the ground and it looks like he hurt his thigh. He's slow getting up but it looks like he will be okay. Just an awkward fall.

Salah tries to race clear again by Otamendi jumps in front of him and wins it back.

Jesus fouls Matip. Liverpool try again. Salah cuts in and it's saved by Bravo.

Double change for Liverpool. TAA off for Matip. Fabinho off for Keita. 

De Bruyne and Gundogan run into each other and City cough up the ball again.

Bernardo bundled off the ball again as Robertson clatters into him. He got the ball and Liverpool win it back.

Game growing more tense by the minute.

That was the chance! Sterling falls over himself in a one-on-one and messes it up.

Gundogan coming on for City as David Silva gives De Bruyne the captains armband.

Quite a long spell of dominance now for Liverpool as they look for the leveller. Some good pressure from them as City are let off the hook twice.

Salah with a lovely move in the penalty are and hits it with his left. Hits the post. Liverpool really unlucky.

Van Dijk hit the crossbar with an effort. It looked like it went in too! But the goal isn't given. So, so close to the equaliser.

Firmino tries to make his way through a crowd in the penalty area. He collides with Stones and says he took an elbow to the juggular. He wins a corner instead of a penalty.

Liverpool holding the ball well as City prevent them from working it out. Ball eventually makes its way to Salah but he can't fully control it and he sends it off Zinchenko for a corner. Another one to the far post by TAA. Headed back in but that tactic not really working Liverpool so far.

Ball over the top as Bravo comes out to clear. Firmino lurking and looking to get on the end of that one.

Headed out by City. Liverpool pushing for the equaliser now. City standing firm. Lovely flick by Firmino into Wijnaldum's path. Blocked by Stones.

Walker out for another corner as Origi tries to nip around the back.

That very nearly could have been it.

Sterling breaks through. He's free and a one-on-one with Alisson. He cracks the post with a curler! 

Salah exciting again as he skips by a challenge and then his touch lets him down. Origi the latest to strike after Liverpool attack again. He curls it, or tries to, but it hits Walker and bounces up to Bravo.

Good chance for City as Sterling sends the ball in from the left and it's taken down by Jesus. David Silva strikes with his left but he doesn't catch it cleanly and he sends it over the bar.

We are back underway for the second half! No changes for either side.

Klopp without as many options on the bench as Guardiola that can make a difference. One of them is Oxlade-Chamberlain though. Let's see if he makes any changes. 

They've looked dangerous on both the left and the right with De Bruyne and Silva on the other side too.

Salah has missed three good chances for Liverpool. They'll get more in the second half but he probably should have converted at least one of them.

That's it for the half. Pep goes down the tunnel and he doesn't look happy but his side lead here after a Sterling goal!

Bernardo Silva with a cross that's cleared by Liverpool. City have looked dangerous down that right hand side all day with Silva and De Bruyne. They get it away but City come straight back down the field at them. They could do with hearing the half-time whistle.

Three minutes of added time at the end of the half as Van Dijk clears with Sterling breathing down his neck. City have recovered after a good spell by Liverpool.

Alisson comes out and spills it under pressure from a City player. Liverpool get it away.

Corner for City now as half-time approaches. 

De Bruyne with a lovely ball across the area and Henderson gets back to head it away.

Origi pushed out of the way now and to the ground. Free for Liverpool. TAA with the free to the back post. He absolutely launched that one too. Headed back to Bravo but that's really tame again.

Game lost its flow there for a minute after the foul. 

Second yellow of the game. Pep Guardiola gets it. He is fuming. 

David Silva ends up on the ground after a challenge that City players feel was high. Gomez got the ball though and it wasn't even a free. Replays inconclusive but Silva is up and looks absolutely fine.

Liverpool go again as Van Dijk lumps one forward. Zinchenko cuts it out. 

City try to grab a little bit of control now. Through ball to De Bruyne finds him but he was just offside! Great ball but just inches offside.

Corner whipped in by TAA but it's over everyone and out for a goalkick. Disappointing from the right-back. He got a nice bend on it but way too hard. 

Liverpool attack again. Cross sent in and Otamendi puts it out for a corner.

Another City attack comes to nothing as Sterling is quite sure what to do with it on the left. City struggling to get and keep the ball as Liverpool have improved and gotten to drips with Pep's tactics. 

Sterling looks for Jesus but Liverpool intercept and attack. Otameni in a race against Salah down Liverpool's right and he has a step on him so he puts it out rather than risking a mistake. Liverpool still can't create anything of not since the goal.

De Bruyne fouls Origi as he attacks and that's a yellow card for the Belgian. The first of the game too.

Rodri clips a marauding Firmino. 

Origi with the cross as Zinchencko heads back to Salah. He hits it with the outside of his boot and it goes a mile wide.

Ball kicked up in the air a couple of times for a minute. Nobody really had control although Pep isn't happy with how it started. Dodgy ball back to Bravo and he kicked it up into the London sky.

Chance for Liverpool as the ball makes its way towards Salah. He's offside though.

Sterling goes by TAA and sends it into the middle. Cleared!

Origi to Henderson but his touch lets him down and Bernardo Silva recovers. He puts it out for a goalkick off Henderson. Wasted possession for Liverpool in a game where it's hard enough to come by.

Brilliant from Salah as he evades a number of would-be tacklers. He lays it off and the ball inside is too hard by Firmino.

Liverpool with a spell of possession now but they aren't as incisive as City. 

Liverpool get slightly lucky there. Jesus plays it inside and they don't deal with it. Falls to Sterling and his first shot is blocked by Alisson and the rebound is cleared but only to a City player. City have really improved now.

This is a game of cat and mouse now as City try to pull Liverpool out of position as they work it out from the back.

Salah cuts inside from the left after Zinchenko misses out on the flight of the ball. Salah strikes and it hits the base of the post and out for a goal kick.

Rodri to Silva and on to De Bruyne as he sends it across and Alisson grabs it.

That change if official. Sane replaced by Jesus.

Alisson gets a leg to it but it's from point blank range and he can't stop it.

There was talk that he had signed with Bayern but he got a start and if off after 10 minutes.

Sane's knee looks to be injured but he's up and walks off. He can't even walk off though without stopping, limping and needing help.

Sane down grabbing his knee as Akexander-Arnold and him get tangled up together. He has hurt his knee, it seems.

City taking control of this one now but Liberpool much sharper. Origi to Firmino and he plays it through to Salah. He hits it first time on his left and drags it wide.

Silva cuts inside again and shoots. It's going wide but takes a nick and goes further wide and out for a corner.

Rodri looking for a free as he is put under pressure. Then De Bruyne is picked off as Liverpool attack. firmino takes it down and hits it on the volley with Bravo making a save. 

Mistake at the back by Gomez is picked off by Sterling. He plays it to Sane and his shot ripples the side netting. 

Origi with more defending to do than he might like so far. He's chasing Bernardo again as City continue to attack.

Bernardo wins a throw as the ball is sent over the top and down on top of Robertson, who deals with it. Liverpool win it back and Origi kicks it off Walker for a throw. 

High, high pressure from Liverpool and they nearly turn the ball over in the six-yard box but City get it away. Good, hectic start to this one! 

We are underway for the first half of the Cmmmunity Shield.

Very old school jerseys for City today. No sponsors on them. Just blue with white collars and a badge. 

We are nearly ready for action here as we have the ginals songs ahead of kick-off. A choir signing God Save The Queen.

Here's a look a the rivalry, or lack thereof, between Liverpool and City. They share a passion for music and football but there is no historic rivalry between LFC and Man City.

City have a much stronger bench with Mane not available. Aguero and Jesus ready to come in if they need a goal.

Mane and Matip the only two changes from the Champions League final. They are both replaced by Gomez and Origi.

Man City XI: Bravo; Walker, Stones, Otamendi, Zinchenko; Rodri, Silva De Bruyne; Sane, Bernardo, Sterling.

Rodri starts for City in his first competitive start since joining the club. Leroy Sane also starts despite rumours that he has a foot and a half in Munich. Claudio Bravo is another player to get a start despite Ederson playing second fiddle to Alisson during the Copa América and seeing very little game time this summer.

There has been some digs ahead of the game. Klopp said Liverpool don't live in a Fantasy Land where they can spend millions every year. Guardiola said it's not true that they spend 200 million every summer and City are surprised that Liverpool are making comments about their transfer strategy.

Wembley looking splendid today for the game.
