Liverpool CEO praised for paying hospital visit to lone fan after Napoli attack
Liverpool CEO Peter Moore was one of the first to respond to pleas to visit the stricken supporter, who was attacked by a group of Napoli fans before the UCL clash.
Liverpool CEO Peter Moore has been widely praised for going out of his way to visit a hospitalised fan who was attacked before the Champions League clash between the Reds and Napoli at the San Paolo Stadium on Tuesday evening.
After reports emerged that Steven Allen was alone in Napoli’s Cardarelli hospital after being attacked by a group of Napoli fans in the run up to the game, Liverpool head executive Moore was one of the first to respond to pleas to visit the stricken supporter.
The alarm bells were raised by Twitter users who shared a message posted by Matty Johnson to a Liverpool fan group, in which he desperately asked for any Reds fans in Napoli to visit the hospital to make sure his friend was in good hands.
“My mate Steven Allen is currently in Ospedale Cardarelli hospital in Napoli. He collapsed at half time due to significant blood loss sustained after being ambushed in a bar by Napoli fans,” wrote Johnson.
“If anyone is in Naples or know of anyone in Naples and is not far from that hospital please could they visit the hospital and check on him. Hard being hundreds of miles away but I’m desperate trying to help a mate here.”
Liverpool CEO reponds
Much to Johnson’s relief, his message reached the Liverpool CEO, who went directly to Cardarelli hospital to check on Allen’s condition.
“I’m at the hospital with Steven right now. We will not leave him until we are comfortable that he’s fine, so can everyone stop worrying for now. Trying to get him seen by a doctor, but there’s a distinct lack of urgency here from the police and medical staff,” tweeted Moore.
Later, Moore took to Twitter again to give an update on Allen’s situation, reporting he was being properly tended to by staff: “The hospital staff and the police have now helped Steven and been very cooperative. He’s been seen and will be monitored throughout the night. He asked me to thank everyone for their concern.”
The attack on Allen was one of a number of reported incidents in the build up to the game. Several Reds supporters were reportedly ambushed by Napoli "Ultras" on scooters and attacked with belts, while another group had glass bottles thrown at them in a separate incident.
