Goal-line technology to make Spanish football debut in Super Cup
The 2020 Spanish Super Cup Final Four involving Valencia, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid will feature goal-line technology.
For the first time in Spanish football, goal-line technology will be used to determine whether the ball has completely crossed the line using the Hawk-Eye system.
The initiative was presented in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) on Wednesday by the Spanish FA with RFEF Referees Committee President Carlos Velasco Carballo stating: "This is a historic day for us, because for the first time in Spanish football, we are going to use goal-line technology".
Fourteen cameras will be utilised with the ability to detect possible "phantom goals", as the cameras will continuously scan the goal line with the first semi-final, which sees Valencia face Real Madrid be the first game to utilise this technology.
The Hawk-Eye system is already in place in major European leagues with the system warning the referee via a vibration on his watch which displays the word "gol" (goal, in Spanish), as soon as the ball fully crosses the line.
Another new initiative to be used in the Spanish Super Cup will offer fans in the stadium the possibility to revisit slow-motion videos used by the VAR referee on the big screen which will allow the public to see what the VAR is checking.
Carballo added: "Success of VAR, today and in the future, will depend on transparency. If people understand what is happening, they will be more inclined to accept decisions".
