Zidane has won a trophy for Real Madrid, on average, every 19 games
With the Spanish Super Cup, Zidane has won 10 trophies with Real Madrid after just 187 games in charge. His penultimate was the Champions League in 2018.
Almost 600 days since Real Madrid won their 13th European crown in Cardiff - Zinedine Zidane's first trophy as Real Madrid coach, the French coach has taken his silverware tally into double figures. This weekend's Spanish Super Cup was Zidane's 10th trophy for the club in little over three years and 10 month. In total, he has overseen 187 official games in charge, which means he has added a new cup to the Bernabéu trophy room, on average, every 19 games.
Where Zidane ranks among Madrid's historic coaches
Zizou is now just four trophies away from equalling the most successful coach in Real Madrid history, Miguel Muñoz who won 14 trophies during his 14 years as coach. Behind Ziozu are some of the most accomplished coaches in Madrid's history - Luis Molowny, who won eight trophies and Vicente del Bosque, who won seven. While Muñoz took eight years to deliver 10 trophies, Zidane has achieved the feat in half as much time. Like Muñoz, Pep Guardiola also won 14 trophies during his time as coach at Barcelona.
Like Muñoz back in his day, Zidane took the Madrid job soon after a painful defeat to Barcelona - the team suffred a 0-4 defeat to Barça at the Bernabéu in November 2015 then were held to a 2-2 draw away at Valencia when Zidane took over from Rafa Benítez at the start of 2016. Since then, Zidane's Madrid have won every final they have reached (Santiago Solari's Madrid also won the Club World Cup in December 2018). Zidane's honours list reads: three Champions Leagues, two European Super Cups, two Spanish Super Cups, two Club World Cups and one LaLiga title. The only trophy that continues to evade him is the Copa del Rey - as a player he played in two finals and lost both of them (to Deportivo and Zaragoza).
Zidane, one trophy away from equalling Cruyff
Now, Zidane is just one trophy away from pulling level with Johan Cruyff, who won 11 trophies during his time in charge at Barcelona. With The Super Cup he has already matched the 10 trophies that Luis Enrique gained with the blaugranas. He is the fourth coach to have won the most trophies with the same club in Spanish football history, according to Míster Chip. And during his coaching career, he has played nine finals and won nine. Comparing that for example with Guardiola - Pep won eight of his first nine finals...
